South Africa created history at the FIFA World Cup 2026 by reaching the knockout stage for the first time after a determined 1-0 victory over South Korea in their final Group A match. Thapelo Maseko’s second-half strike proved decisive as Hugo Broos’ side completed a remarkable turnaround following a difficult start to the tournament.
The achievement is even more impressive considering the challenges South Africa faced before the competition began. Administrative complications and visa delays disrupted their preparations, leaving uncertainty over whether the squad would even travel to the tournament on time.
Those issues appeared to affect the team during their opening match against Mexico, where South Africa suffered a disappointing defeat and had two players sent off. Sphephelo Sithole received a red card for a last-man challenge, while Themba Zwane was dismissed after an off-the-ball incident that later resulted in a three-match suspension.
With their campaign seemingly in danger of unraveling, South Africa responded with resilience. A hard-fought 1-1 draw against Czechia kept their qualification hopes alive and set up a decisive encounter against South Korea.
Knowing victory would secure a place in the Round of 32, South Africa adopted an aggressive approach and looked dangerous on the counterattack throughout the match. South Korea started brightly and controlled the early stages, but the African side gradually settled into the contest and began creating opportunities of their own.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 63rd minute when Thapelo Maseko drove into the penalty area and calmly finished past the goalkeeper to spark celebrations among South African supporters.
South Africa finished the match with 14 shots and four efforts on target, gradually taking control after surviving South Korea’s early pressure. Yaya Sithole, returning after missing the previous match, delivered a strong performance in midfield and helped his team maintain defensive stability.
As the match entered its closing stages, South Africa switched to a more defensive setup, protecting their lead with disciplined defending and crucial clearances. Despite introducing star forward Son Heung-min at halftime, South Korea struggled to create clear-cut opportunities and failed to break down the organized South African backline.
The victory secured South Africa’s place in the knockout rounds and marked one of the country’s greatest achievements on the international football stage. After missing the previous three World Cups, Bafana Bafana have now announced their return in memorable fashion.
Mexico Finish Group Stage with Perfect Record
Elsewhere in Group A, Mexico completed a flawless group-stage campaign with a convincing 3-0 victory over Czechia. Already assured of top spot, the co-hosts continued their impressive form and finished with three wins from three matches.
Mateo Chavez opened the scoring in the 55th minute before Julian Quinones doubled the advantage six minutes later. Alvaro Fidalgo added a late third goal to seal the victory and send Mexico into the knockout rounds with maximum points and growing confidence.
With South Africa making history and Mexico maintaining their perfect record, Group A concluded with both teams progressing to the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32.
