The United States became one of the first teams to qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage after registering a comfortable 2-0 victory over Australia in Seattle on Friday.

Coached by Mauricio Pochettino, the USMNT followed up their impressive 4-1 win over Paraguay with another commanding performance, collecting six points from their opening two Group D matches and booking their place in the Round of 32 with a game to spare.

USA Clinch Knockout Spot

The Americans took the lead in the 11th minute when Australian defender Cameron Burgess accidentally turned the ball into his own net. The hosts doubled their advantage just before halftime as Alex Freeman headed home to seal a convincing victory.

After the match, Pochettino praised his team’s display, highlighting their control of the game against a difficult opponent.

“It was a fantastic game again, very good first half. We dominated the game against a very tough team,” Pochettino said.

The United States could also finish top of Group D depending on the outcome of the match between Turkey and Paraguay.

Australia Left Disappointed

Australia coach Tony Popovic admitted his side struggled throughout the contest and failed to match the intensity of the hosts.

“We were slow to every ball and couldn’t wrestle back momentum. We looked flat and lethargic in the first half,” Popovic said.

The defeat leaves Australia’s qualification hopes hanging in the balance ahead of their final group-stage fixture.

Morocco Defeat Scotland

In Group C, Morocco strengthened their chances of reaching the knockout rounds with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Scotland in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Ismael Saibari scored the decisive goal in just the second minute, firing a powerful strike past the Scottish goalkeeper. Despite sustained pressure from Scotland during the closing stages, Morocco held firm to secure all three points.

The result moves Morocco to the top of Group C with four points from two matches, while Scotland remain on three points and may need a positive result against Brazil in their final group game to stay alive in the tournament.

Iran Raise Concerns Off the Field

Meanwhile, off-field controversy continued as officials from Iran’s football federation announced plans to submit a complaint to FIFA regarding travel restrictions affecting the team’s preparations during the tournament.

Iranian football authorities claim logistical issues have impacted the squad ahead of their upcoming Group Stage fixture against Belgium.

World Cup Qualification Race Intensifies

With the United States and Mexico already securing knockout-stage places, attention now turns to the remaining group-stage matches as teams battle for qualification. Morocco are well-positioned to advance, while Australia and Scotland face crucial final fixtures in their quest to reach the Round of 32.
