Who Is Kira Chathli? England A Captain and MI London Star

Kira Chathli is preparing to lead England A Women on their tour of India, returning to a country that holds a special place in her personal and cricketing journey. The Surrey wicketkeeper-batter has steadily built her reputation in English domestic cricket and attracted significant attention after securing an £80,000 deal with MI London in The Hundred.

The 27-year-old has developed into a dependable domestic cricketer through her performances for Surrey and several franchise teams. Combining wicketkeeping skills with useful contributions as a batter, Chathli has gained experience across formats while strengthening her credentials as a leader.

Her appointment as England A captain adds another important milestone to her career. The tour features three T20 matches, three 50-over games and a four-day match against India A Women, giving Chathli an opportunity to demonstrate her leadership against strong opposition.

However, this assignment is about more than cricket for Chathli. With Indian family roots and a father who is a lifelong Mumbai Indians supporter, her return to India carries a personal significance that makes the tour particularly special.

Who Is Kira Chathli?

Kira Chathli is an English wicketkeeper-batter who represents Surrey in domestic cricket and has played for several teams in England’s women’s cricket competitions. She began her county career at a remarkably young age and has gradually established herself through performances in domestic tournaments and franchise cricket.

Chathli made her county debut for Surrey against Essex in 2013, aged just 14. Since then, she has gained experience with teams including South East Stars, Trent Rockets, London Spirit and Oval Invincibles.

Her domestic career has included team success as well as individual progress. She was part of the Oval Invincibles squad that won The Hundred in 2022 and helped South East Stars secure the Charlotte Edwards Cup in 2021.

Chathli’s performances behind the stumps and her ability to contribute with the bat have helped her build a reputation in the English domestic game. Her appointment as England A captain represents another opportunity to demonstrate those qualities on an international development tour.

Kira Chathli’s Indian Family Connection

One of the most interesting aspects of Chathli’s story is her connection to India. She grew up in Southwark, London, in a multicultural environment and was introduced to cricket largely through her father, Harry, who played club cricket as an all-rounder and wicketkeeper.

Some of Chathli’s earliest memories of cricket came during family trips to India. She watched her father play the sport and gradually developed a strong personal connection with the game. Those early experiences helped shape her cricketing journey and made India an important part of her family’s story.

Her father’s background adds another dimension to that connection. Harry grew up in the suburbs of Mumbai and has been a lifelong supporter of the Mumbai Indians franchise. His passion for cricket and his own playing experience helped introduce Chathli to the sport at an early age.

For Chathli, returning to India as England A captain is therefore more than another professional assignment. It brings together her family background, childhood memories and the career she has built in English cricket.

Why MI London Holds Special Significance for Kira Chathli

Chathli’s connection to Indian cricket became even more meaningful when she signed for MI London in The Hundred. The franchise is associated with the Mumbai Indians ownership group, making the move particularly exciting for her family.

Her father has supported Mumbai Indians for years, so seeing his daughter join a franchise connected to his favourite team created a special moment. The signing brought together his long-standing support for the team and Chathli’s own progress as a professional cricketer.

The move also reflects the growing influence of investment in women’s domestic cricket in England. Chathli has expressed enthusiasm about the role Indian investment can play in helping the women’s game develop and reach a wider audience.

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo last year, she highlighted the importance of bringing India’s cricketing passion into the English domestic structure.

“Obviously cricket is massive in India, and to make that translate here through Indian investment is a really cool thing,” Chathli told Cricinfo.

Her comments underline why the MI London connection matters beyond the financial value of the contract. It also represents a link between her family background and the evolving landscape of women’s franchise cricket in England.

Kira Chathli’s £80,000 MI London Deal Explained

Chathli attracted considerable interest at the 2026 The Hundred auction, where a three-way bidding contest developed before MI London secured her services for £80,000.

The reported fee made her the most expensive English wicketkeeper at the auction, highlighting the value the franchise placed on her abilities. Her experience in domestic cricket, wicketkeeping skills and capacity to contribute with the bat made her an attractive option.

The signing also represents an important step in Chathli’s career. Having developed through England’s domestic system, she now has another opportunity to showcase her abilities in a high-profile franchise competition.

Her performances in The Hundred suggest she can contribute in the tournament’s fast-paced format. Across 27 matches, she has scored 289 runs at an average of 16.05 and a strike rate of 125.10, including two half-centuries.

How Has Kira Chathli Performed for Surrey and Other Domestic Teams?

Chathli’s development has been shaped by years of experience in England’s domestic cricket structure. After making her Surrey debut as a teenager, she continued to gain opportunities across county and franchise competitions.

Her involvement with South East Stars, Trent Rockets, London Spirit and Oval Invincibles has exposed her to different team environments and formats. Those experiences have helped her develop as a wicketkeeper-batter while giving her opportunities to contribute to successful campaigns.

One of the notable achievements of her career came in 2021, when South East Stars won the Charlotte Edwards Cup. The following year, she was part of the Oval Invincibles team that lifted The Hundred trophy.

These team successes have added to her experience and helped establish her as a player familiar with the demands of competitive domestic cricket. Her growing responsibilities have also contributed to her development as a leader, culminating in her appointment as England A captain for the India tour.

Kira Chathli’s Record in The Hundred

The Hundred has provided Chathli with a platform to demonstrate her abilities in one of England’s most prominent domestic competitions. In 27 appearances, she has accumulated 289 runs, recording a batting average of 16.05 and a strike rate of 125.10.

She has also registered two half-centuries in the competition. Although these numbers represent only one part of her overall contribution as a wicketkeeper-batter, they provide an indication of her experience in the tournament’s demanding format.

Her £80,000 signing by MI London reflects the franchise’s confidence in her ability to contribute to the team. The auction interest also demonstrates how established domestic players can attract significant investment as women’s franchise cricket continues to develop.

Kira Chathli’s Impressive Performance in 50-Over Cricket

Chathli has also demonstrated her ability to contribute in the longer format of domestic one-day cricket. During the 2024 Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, she scored 251 runs at an average of 50.20.

Her campaign included three half-centuries, highlighting her capacity to produce consistent performances in 50-over cricket. The average suggests she was able to make meaningful contributions across her innings rather than relying exclusively on short bursts of scoring.

These performances add another dimension to her profile as a wicketkeeper-batter. While her experience in The Hundred has provided opportunities in a fast-paced format, her results in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy demonstrate her effectiveness in longer domestic contests.

That versatility could be valuable as she takes charge of England A across a tour that includes both limited-overs cricket and a four-day match.

England A Tour of India: What Lies Ahead for Kira Chathli?

Chathli will lead England A Women against India A Women in a multi-format series featuring three T20 matches, three 50-over games and a four-day match.

The tour will test her leadership skills across different formats while providing an opportunity to face opposition in conditions associated with her family background. It also represents a chance to build on her domestic experience and demonstrate that she can handle the responsibility of captaining a side.

Leading England A is a significant opportunity for Chathli, particularly as she continues to pursue greater recognition in English cricket. Her experience with Surrey and several franchise teams provides a foundation for the assignment, while her performances in both short-form and 50-over competitions offer evidence of her adaptability.

Although the tour is a development opportunity rather than a guarantee of future international selection, strong performances could help strengthen her profile. For Chathli, the series combines the challenge of leadership with a return to a country that has played a meaningful role in her cricketing journey.

Why Kira Chathli’s Story Stands Out

Chathli’s journey brings together several important aspects of modern women’s cricket: development through the domestic system, opportunities in franchise competitions, leadership responsibilities and the influence of investment in the women’s game.

Her cricketing career began early, with a Surrey county debut at just 14. Since then, she has played for multiple domestic and franchise teams, experienced trophy-winning campaigns and established herself as a wicketkeeper-batter with contributions across formats.

The £80,000 MI London deal represents another milestone, particularly because of her family’s long-standing connection to Mumbai Indians. Her father’s enthusiasm for the franchise makes the signing a personal achievement as well as a professional opportunity.

Now, as England A captain, Chathli has the chance to bring those experiences together on a tour of India. Her appointment highlights her progress in domestic cricket and gives her another opportunity to demonstrate her leadership potential.
