Yaya Touré has overseen a difficult Champions League campaign with Slovan Bratislava, as the Slovakian champions have set an unwanted record for consecutive defeats in the competition’s main phase. Their latest loss has extended a miserable run and brought the club closer to matching an even longer losing streak in European Football history.

Slovan Bratislava suffered a 4-0 defeat against LASK in Austria on Tuesday, marking their 14th consecutive defeat in the Champions League’s main phase since the competition was rebranded in 1992. The result moved them past Marseille’s previous record of 13 successive losses, recorded between March 2012 and November 2020.

However, the all-time European Cup record remains with Luxembourg side Jeunesse Esch, who lost 16 consecutive first-round matches in the old competition format. Slovan now face the possibility of matching that unwanted mark if their difficult run continues.

Slovan Bratislava Set Champions League Record Under Yaya Touré

Touré, who won the Champions League with Barcelona in 2009, acknowledged the difficulty of his team’s latest performance after the heavy defeat to LASK. The former Ivory Coast midfielder is making history as the first African coach in the Champions League, but his first season in charge has brought a challenging run of results.

“It’s very difficult, to be honest,” Touré said after the defeat. “They were more aggressive, maybe we didn’t fight enough, but sometimes you have to just respect it.”

The 14-match losing streak means Slovan have moved beyond Marseille’s previous record for consecutive defeats in the competition’s main phase. Their latest result also highlights the scale of the challenge facing Touré as he attempts to improve the team’s performances in Europe.

How Slovan Bratislava’s Losing Run Began

Slovan Bratislava’s difficult Champions League history dates back to October 1992, when they lost home and away to AC Milan in the second round. At that time, the competition was in its inaugural season following its rebranding from the European Cup, and the early stages still followed a knockout format.

The club’s latest run includes eight defeats during 2024, when the Champions League introduced its new league-phase format, followed by four additional losses this season. Those results have taken Slovan to 14 consecutive defeats in the competition’s main phase.

The club now have two important fixtures remaining, with home matches against Real Betis and Shakhtar Donetsk. Avoiding further defeats would help Slovan prevent their losing streak from reaching the historic European Cup record held by Jeunesse Esch.

Jeunesse Esch Still Hold the All-Time European Record

Although Slovan have surpassed Marseille’s Champions League record, Jeunesse Esch remain at the top of the all-time list for consecutive defeats in the European Cup. The Luxembourg club endured a 16-match losing streak that lasted from September 1973 until September 1987.

Jeunesse Esch began that sequence with a 1-1 draw against Liverpool in September 1973. They subsequently lost all 16 of their first-round matches in the competition before finally ending the run with a 1-0 victory over Danish champions Aarhus in September 1987.

Slovan’s upcoming matches against Real Betis and Shakhtar Donetsk will therefore carry additional significance. Another two defeats would bring the Slovakian side level with Jeunesse Esch’s unwanted record, which has stood for decades.

Slovan Bratislava Also Face Domestic Qualification Concerns

The club’s problems are not limited to European competition. Slovan Bratislava are also at risk of missing out on Champions League qualifying rounds next season for the first time in nine seasons.

Touré’s team currently trail Slovakian league leaders FC Dac by eight points, with the leaders still unbeaten. The gap places additional pressure on Slovan to improve their domestic performances while continuing to compete across multiple competitions.

The demanding schedule has also become a concern for Touré, who believes fatigue has affected his players. With matches taking place every two or three days, the coach said the workload has accumulated within the squad.

“It’s not easy, but the season is long,” Touré said. “We’re fighting in multiple competitions, at the moment we’re playing every two or three days and the fatigue has accumulated with this set of players.”

Touré Faces a Difficult Challenge in His First Champions League Season

Touré’s experience as a Champions League winner with Barcelona gives him a strong connection to the competition, but his new role as Slovan Bratislava’s coach has presented a very different challenge. Instead of competing for European honours, he is now trying to guide a struggling side through a difficult campaign.

The 4-0 loss to LASK has placed Slovan in the record books for the wrong reasons, ending Marseille’s long-standing mark of 13 consecutive defeats in the Champions League main phase. Their remaining fixtures offer an opportunity to stop the slide before it reaches the European Cup record of 16 losses.

With domestic league points also at stake and a demanding schedule continuing, Touré must find a way to manage fatigue and improve results across competitions. Slovan’s next two European matches could prove significant in determining whether their losing streak stops at 14 or moves closer to one of the longest unwanted records in the history of European club football.
