Former US Vice President Kamala Harris has strongly criticized US Immigration authorities following the detention of a five-year-old boy in Minnesota, an incident that has triggered widespread public outrage.
The child, Liam Conejo Ramos, an Ecuadorian national seeking asylum in the United States with his parents, was detained on Tuesday after returning home from preschool with his father. According to reports, Liam was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials and later transferred to an immigration detention facility in Texas.
Images circulating on social media showed the visibly distressed child as armed and masked ICE officers escorted him into an SUV. The images quickly went viral, drawing sharp criticism from political leaders, advocacy groups, and the public.
Reacting to the incident, Harris — who lost the 2024 presidential election to Donald Trump — expressed outrage on social media. “Liam Ramos is just a child,” she wrote. “Instead of being held in a Texas detention facility and used as leverage by ICE, he should be at home with his family. I am furious — and you should be too.”
Witnesses claim that immigration officers attempted to use the child’s detention to draw out his mother. Mary Granlund, chair of the Columbia Heights School Board, told Reuters that ICE officials allegedly sought to pressure Liam’s mother into leaving the house. However, the boy’s father reportedly advised her to remain inside to avoid arrest.
Granlund further stated that school officials, family members, and neighbors all offered to care for the child, but those offers were refused by ICE officers at the scene.
The US Department of Homeland Security disputed these claims, stating that the child was not the intended target of the operation. DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said Liam’s father fled on foot during the arrest, leaving the child behind. “For the child’s safety, one ICE officer remained with the child while the other officers apprehended Conejo Arias,” she said, adding that parents are given the option to take their children with them or place them with a designated guardian.
Vice President JD Vance defended the actions of ICE officials, stating that Liam’s father “abandoned his son” while attempting to evade arrest. Speaking at a press conference in Minneapolis, Vance said, “What should officers do in that situation? Leave a five-year-old alone in the cold? Are they not supposed to arrest an individual who is in the country illegally?”
The incident has reignited debate over US immigration enforcement practices, particularly concerning the treatment of children and families seeking asylum, and comes amid heightened political tensions over border and immigration policy.
