A Class 10 student was critically injured after a man allegedly entered her classroom and attacked her with a chainsaw at a government school in Raptadu village of Andhra Pradesh’s Anantapur district on Saturday, October 31. Another student was also injured while attempting to intervene in the assault.
The shocking incident took place at the Zilla Parishad High School during school hours, triggering panic among students and teachers. The 15-year-old victim suffered severe injuries, including deep cuts to her neck and abdomen, while her right hand was reportedly nearly severed. She was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment and remains in critical condition, according to reports.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the attack. While some media reports said the suspect had been apprehended in Dharmavaram, other reports quoting police said teams were still searching for him. Investigators are working to establish the circumstances and motive behind the assault.
CHAINSAW ATTACK INSIDE CLASSROOM
According to preliminary reports, the attacker entered the Zilla Parishad High School in Raptadu while classes were underway and targeted the Class 10 student inside her classroom. The assault took place in front of other students, many of whom were left terrified by the sudden violence.
The victim sustained serious injuries to her neck and other parts of her body. A second girl was also injured after attempting to stop the attacker and protect her classmate.
Teachers and other school staff alerted the police and arranged for the injured students to be taken to hospital. The critically injured girl was initially shifted to a nearby medical facility before being taken to Anantapur Government Hospital for further treatment, according to local reports.
The attack has also raised questions about security arrangements at the school. Reports said repair work was underway on the premises, prompting concerns about how the attacker managed to enter the school carrying a power saw and reach the classroom.
CHANDRABABU NAIDU SPEAKS TO VICTIM’S MOTHER
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed shock and anger over the attack and said he was personally monitoring the victim’s medical condition. He spoke to officials to obtain details about her injuries and the treatment being provided.
Naidu directed the medical team to give the girl the highest priority and ensure that she received the best possible care. He also spoke to the victim’s mother over the phone, offering reassurance and promising government support to the family during the difficult period.
The Chief Minister also contacted local MLA Paritala Sunitha to enquire about the medical assistance being provided to the injured students. He sought updates on the condition of the second girl and instructed officials to ensure that both victims received proper treatment.
Naidu assured the victim’s family that the authorities would take strict action against the person responsible for the attack.
CM NAIDU AND NARA LOKESH CONDEMN ATTACK
In a post on X, Naidu said he was “deeply shaken and enraged” by the attack on the schoolgirl. He condemned the violence, saying that those who target young girls inside educational institutions have no place in society.
“I am personally tracking her recovery and have directed the medical team to give her the highest priority care. I have ordered the police to hunt down the monster responsible and deliver the harshest legal punishment swiftly,” he wrote.
Andhra Pradesh Minister Nara Lokesh also expressed anguish over the incident, describing the assault as an inhuman act against a young girl in a place meant to provide education and safety.
Lokesh said the Chief Minister had directed the police to take swift and stringent action against the accused and ensure that he was brought to justice.
He added that the safety and dignity of every girl and woman were paramount and that such acts of brutality would not be tolerated.
POLICE INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY, ACCUSED REPORTEDLY APPREHENDED
Police registered a case following the attack and began collecting evidence from the school premises. Teams were deployed to trace the suspect and determine how he gained access to the classroom with a chainsaw.
Initial reports indicated that the attacker was allegedly a relative of one of the injured girls. However, investigators are examining the relationship between the suspect and the victim, along with the possible motive behind the assault.
Reports from local media said the suspect had been taken into custody in Dharmavaram. However, information from police quoted by other outlets indicated that a search was still underway. Further official details about the arrest and the investigation were awaited.
The police are also expected to examine the school’s security arrangements and the circumstances that allowed an outsider to enter the premises during teaching hours.
ATTACK RAISES QUESTIONS OVER SCHOOL SECURITY
The incident has renewed concerns about the safety of students inside educational institutions, particularly the security measures followed during regular school hours. Parents and relatives have questioned how a person carrying a dangerous power tool could enter the school and reach a classroom without being stopped.
Schools are expected to provide a safe environment where children can attend classes without fear of violence. The attack in Raptadu has highlighted the importance of controlling access to school premises, monitoring visitors and ensuring that staff can respond quickly to emergencies.
With two students injured and the main victim receiving treatment for critical wounds, the immediate priority remains their recovery. The investigation will also seek to establish the attacker’s motive and determine whether any security lapses contributed to the incident.
Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has promised strict action against the accused, while police continue their investigation into the attack that has shocked the Anantapur district.
