Fast bowler Avesh Khan has opened up about the helmet-throwing celebration that became one of the most talked-about moments of IPL 2023. The incident occurred after Lucknow Super Giants secured a thrilling last-ball victory over Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Although Avesh was not the batter who hit the winning run, he celebrated passionately by throwing his helmet onto the ground. The moment quickly went viral on social media and continues to be discussed by cricket fans even three years later.

Speaking during an interaction with ANI, the pacer admitted that he is surprised by the attention the incident still receives.

“I only did that once three years ago, and I don’t understand why people are still so obsessed with it. If I’m on the field and we win, we’ll see how it goes, but it’s all about the emotions at that moment,” Avesh said.

Avesh Khan Previously Admitted Celebration Went Too Far

The 29-year-old had earlier expressed regret over the celebration, acknowledging that his emotions got the better of him during the tense finish. Despite that, the clip continues to resurface regularly across social media platforms whenever discussions around memorable IPL celebrations emerge.

At present, Avesh is representing Chambal Ghariyals in the Madhya Pradesh Premier League (MPPL) 2026. Playing under captain Shubham Sharma, the pacer has enjoyed a productive campaign, taking nine wickets in five matches and helping his side reach the semifinals.

Struggles Continue After IPL 2026 Season

Avesh endured a difficult IPL 2026 campaign where he struggled to secure a regular place in the playing XI. He featured in seven matches and picked up only six wickets at an average of 45.50 while conceding runs at an economy rate of 11.06.

His last standout IPL season came in 2024 with Rajasthan Royals. However, his best performance remains IPL 2021, when he represented Delhi Capitals and claimed 24 wickets in 16 matches to emerge as one of the tournament’s leading wicket-takers.

Has Avesh Khan Fallen Out of India’s Plans?

Avesh has not represented India since 2024 and currently finds himself behind several emerging fast bowlers in the national pecking order.

In international cricket, he has played eight ODIs and 25 T20Is, collecting nine and 27 wickets respectively. His most memorable T20I performance came against South Africa in 2022 when he registered a four-wicket haul.

Once considered a strong contender across formats and even included as a backup option in India’s Test setup, Avesh’s dip in form and increased competition have pushed him out of contention. Strong performances in domestic cricket and franchise tournaments could be key to reviving his hopes of an international comeback.
