United States manager Mauricio Pochettino has strongly criticized the decision to send off Folarin Balogun during his team’s 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32. While the Americans secured a place in the Round of 16, the dismissal of one of their key attackers has become a major talking point.
Balogun had given the USA the lead just before halftime with his third goal of the tournament. However, in the 64th minute, the striker was shown a straight red card after a VAR review upgraded the referee’s initial yellow card decision. The incident occurred when Balogun’s foot landed on the ankle of Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemovic while contesting possession.
Pochettino was adamant that the challenge was accidental and should not have resulted in a dismissal.
“For me, it was never a red card,” Pochettino said after the match. “There was never any intention to step on the player. It was a normal football action while fighting for the ball. Maybe in slow motion it appears worse, but there was no intent.”
The red card means Balogun will miss the United States’ upcoming Round of 16 clash against Belgium due to suspension. Despite the disappointment, Pochettino revealed that the striker remained positive after the victory.
“He is disappointed because the action was unintentional, but he is also happy because we qualified. These situations happen in football. Hopefully we advance further so he can return and help the team again,” Pochettino added.
USA captain Christian Pulisic also supported his teammate, describing the decision as harsh and unfortunate.
Even after being reduced to ten men, the United States produced a disciplined defensive display. Midfielder Malik Tillman sealed the win with a superb free-kick, ensuring the hosts booked their first World Cup knockout-stage victory since 2002.
Pochettino praised Tillman’s performance and highlighted the team’s growth throughout the tournament.
“Malik is an outstanding player with incredible talent. We knew he had the ability to score from that position. I’m very happy for him,” Pochettino said.
The Argentine coach also applauded his squad’s maturity and resilience in difficult circumstances.
“The players were amazing. There are no easy matches at the World Cup. The way this team has developed over the last few weeks has been incredible, and tonight they showed great character,” he concluded.
