Vaibhav Suryavanshi‘s India debut remains uncertain despite growing excitement surrounding the teenage sensation ahead of the first T20I against England. Former India batter Cheteshwar Pujara has suggested that the 15-year-old is unlikely to be handed an immediate debut, as Team India are expected to continue with their experienced batting lineup at the start of the five-match series.
Suryavanshi has emerged as one of India’s most exciting young prospects after a sensational IPL 2026 campaign, earning his maiden national call-up for the Ireland and England T20I assignments. However, he is yet to receive his first India cap despite widespread calls from fans following India’s disappointing 0-2 T20I series defeat to Ireland.
Cheteshwar Pujara explains why Vaibhav Suryavanshi may have to wait
Speaking on Star Sports, Pujara advised the youngster to ignore the growing hype around his name and focus entirely on his development rather than public expectations.
“There is a lot of hype around him, and as a young player, he shouldn’t be focusing on what is being said about him. I don’t think he will get an opportunity straight up,” Pujara said.
Pujara also explained that India’s settled top-order makes it difficult for Suryavanshi to break straight into the playing XI. According to the former Test batter, the teenager could get an opportunity later in the series if India decide to rotate the squad, while also highlighting that batting in English conditions presents a completely different challenge from the IPL.
Teenager still waiting for maiden India cap
Suryavanshi earned national recognition after a remarkable IPL 2026 season, where his fearless strokeplay established him as one of the country’s brightest batting talents. Despite being included in India’s squads for both the Ireland and England T20I series, the left-handed opener is still awaiting his international debut.
With India expected to back their experienced top-order in the early matches against England, Suryavanshi may have to remain patient for his opportunity. Nevertheless, his selection at just 15 years of age reflects the selectors’ long-term faith in his immense potential and future role in Indian cricket.
