Former India cricketer and commentator Aakash Chopra has questioned the continued exclusion of veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja from India’s ODI squad for the upcoming three-match series against England.
India will begin their ODI series against England on July 14 in Birmingham, but Jadeja has once again been left out of the 15-member squad. The selectors have instead opted for Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, and Kuldeep Yadav as the spin options.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra expressed confusion over the selectors’ stance regarding Jadeja’s future in the format.
“Every time the selection happens, they say that he will continue to play in this format and that he has a role to play. However, when the squad is announced, he is not selected. Someone else keeps getting picked ahead of him,” Chopra said.
Jadeja’s Future Under Scanner
Chopra pointed out that Jadeja should have fully recovered from the injury issues that troubled him during IPL 2026 and questioned whether the selectors had already made a decision regarding his ODI career.
“Axar Patel is back, Washington Sundar is part of the team, and Kuldeep Yadav is there as well. So what exactly is happening with Ravindra Jadeja? It has been more than a month since the IPL. There has been no explanation regarding his absence,” Chopra added.
The former opener suggested that the repeated omissions could indicate that the selectors are moving on from the experienced all-rounder despite publicly maintaining otherwise.
Jadeja has represented India in 210 ODIs, scoring 2,905 runs and claiming 232 wickets. He featured in all three ODIs against New Zealand earlier this year but struggled to make an impact with either bat or ball.
Siraj’s Exclusion Also Raises Questions
Chopra also expressed surprise over the absence of fast bowler Mohammed Siraj from the England ODI squad.
India have selected five specialist pacers in Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, and Gurnoor Brar. While Chopra acknowledged that all five deserve their spots, he admitted he was puzzled by Siraj’s omission.
“I have no idea why Siraj’s name isn’t there. Gurnoor Brar has taken giant strides and performed brilliantly, while Prasidh Krishna has been outstanding. Harshit Rana offers batting depth and Arshdeep provides a left-arm option,” Chopra said.
Selectors Looking Ahead to 2027 ODI World Cup
According to Chopra, the squad selection appears to be part of a long-term strategy focused on the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa. He believes the management is investing in younger players and building a pace attack suited to South African conditions.
While he sympathized with Siraj and questioned Jadeja’s absence, Chopra noted that the selected pace bowlers are currently ahead in the race for World Cup spots.
India’s England ODI series will provide further clues about the team management’s plans as they continue shaping their squad for the next major ICC event.
