England Announce First Post-Bazball Test Squad: Joe Root Returns as Captain for Pakistan Series

England have announced a 16-member squad for the first two Tests of their three-match home series against Pakistan, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the team’s Test journey following the end of the Bazball era.

Former captain Joe Root has been reinstated as England’s Test skipper after Ben Stokes’ retirement, while Marcus Trescothick will serve as interim head coach before Stephen Fleming officially takes charge of the red-ball side.

The squad reflects a balanced approach, combining players who flourished during the Bazball era with experienced names returning after impressive domestic performances.

Dan Lawrence, Ollie Pope and Sam Cook Return

Among the notable inclusions are Dan Lawrence, Ollie Pope and Sam Cook, all of whom have earned recalls after falling out of England’s first-choice plans in recent seasons.

Lawrence returns for the first time since England’s 2024 series against Sri Lanka and is expected to occupy the No. 6 position following an outstanding County Championship campaign with Surrey. His useful off-spin also provides England with an additional bowling option.

Pope returns to the squad after losing his place during the Ashes tour of Australia, while Cook strengthens an already formidable pace attack.

Jordan Cox Promoted After Jacob Bethell Injury

Jordan Cox is set to bat at No. 3 after Jacob Bethell was ruled out of the entire Pakistan series with a right-knee injury sustained during England’s recent ODI series against India.

Cox made his Test debut against New Zealand earlier this year but now faces the challenge of filling one of the most demanding positions in England’s batting order.

England have retained several core players from the Bazball era, including Harry Brook, Ben Duckett, Jamie Smith and Shoaib Bashir, while also boasting a deep pace attack featuring Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Matthew Fisher, Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue.

Marcus North Explains Selection

National selector Marcus North said the squad strikes the right balance between youth and experience ahead of a challenging series.

“We have selected a squad for the first two Tests that balances rising talent with the experience needed against a quality Pakistan team,” North said.

The first Test will begin at Headingley on August 19 before the second Test at Lord’s on August 27. The final Test of the series will be played at Edgbaston in September.
