Ireland captain Lorcan Tucker described his side’s maiden international victory over India as a “pretty special” achievement after leading his team to a memorable 34-run win in the opening T20I in Belfast.
Tucker played a captain’s knock, scoring a composed 50 off 36 balls to guide Ireland to 182/9 before the bowlers dismissed the reigning T20 World Cup champions for 148, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
Tucker Delighted With Historic Victory
Reflecting on the landmark result, Tucker credited the entire squad and support staff, while reserving special praise for Ireland’s two debutants, who made immediate impacts.
“It’s a pretty special thing to beat the world champions at home. Credit is due to the lads. We had two debutants who put in absolutely outstanding performances. Everyone behind the scenes at Cricket Ireland works incredibly hard, and it’s great to reward that effort with a result like this,” Tucker said.
With his innings, Tucker also became the first player in T20I history to score a half-century in each of his first three matches as captain.
Ireland Stayed Patient Under Pressure
Tucker and Gareth Delany added a crucial 64-run partnership after India made an excellent start with the ball. Delany contributed a valuable 49 off 32 deliveries as Ireland recovered to post a competitive total.
“We scrapped through that game. We had some tough periods in it, but we stayed in it, remained diligent, worked hard and were fortunate to get the reward in the end,” Tucker added.
The Ireland skipper admitted India’s disciplined bowling initially made scoring difficult but praised his side for remaining patient before accelerating later in the innings.
Debutants Impress Against India
Debutants Jai Moondra and Matt Hollard enjoyed dream starts to their international careers. Moondra dismissed Sanju Samson with his very first delivery in international cricket, while Hollard removed Ishan Kishan with just his second ball.
Tucker said Ireland’s bowlers successfully replicated India’s hard-length strategy, making life difficult for the visitors throughout the chase.
“They were really dogged. We learned a lot from how India bowled in the first innings. They stuck to their lengths, and we asked our bowlers to do the same. Full credit to the debutants—they executed the plans brilliantly and made things very difficult for India’s batters,” Tucker said.
Ireland Take Series Lead
The victory marks Ireland’s first-ever international win over India and gives them a 1-0 advantage heading into the final match of the T20I series. With confidence soaring after a disciplined all-round display, the hosts will now look to seal a historic series triumph against the reigning world champions.
