Ravichandran Ashwin Suggests MS Dhoni Could Lead CSK’s New Coaching Structure After Stephen Fleming Exit

Chennai Super Kings are entering a new chapter after the departure of long-time head coach Stephen Fleming, and former franchise star Ravichandran Ashwin has offered an intriguing perspective on how the team should move forward.

Speaking about CSK’s coaching future, Ashwin suggested that MS Dhoni could play a central role in guiding the franchise, questioning whether the team even requires another high-profile head coach while the legendary captain remains involved with the setup.

Ashwin Questions the Need for Another “Alpha” Figure

Fleming and Dhoni formed one of the most successful partnerships in IPL history, helping Chennai Super Kings win multiple titles and maintain remarkable consistency over nearly two decades.

Ashwin pointed out that Fleming’s success was built largely on his strong understanding with Dhoni and his ability to complement the former India captain’s leadership style.

“In a team where Dhoni is there, he will only lead the things and he will only call the shots. Fleming had a great relationship with Dhoni and it worked. With Dhoni there, is there a requirement for another alpha? Maybe not.”

The veteran spinner believes replacing Fleming with another dominant personality could be challenging because of the unique influence Dhoni continues to have within the franchise.

Potential Coaching Setup for IPL 2027

Ashwin also shared his vision for what Chennai Super Kings’ support staff could look like heading into IPL 2027.

According to him, CSK could adopt a lean coaching structure featuring experienced cricket minds while allowing Dhoni and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad to oversee key cricketing decisions.

“My personal guess and opinion is Sridharan Sriram, Rajiv, and probably another bowling coach like Munaf Patel or Ishant Sharma. They can keep a light model in the staff and Dhoni can make the cricketing calls and communicate with Gaikwad.”

The suggestion reflects Ashwin’s belief that continuity and familiarity may be more valuable than appointing a marquee international coach.

“First, clarity has to come from Dhoni on whether he wants to run this from here on. Does he want to take the backseat with someone else being there, or does he want to be the ace?”
