england survived a major scare against DR Congo to secure a 2-1 comeback victory and advance to the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16. However, manager Thomas Tuchel is already focused on a different challenge awaiting his side — a trip to Mexico City to face an in-form Mexican team at the iconic Estadio Azteca.
Harry Kane’s late brace rescued England from a shock exit, but Tuchel believes the physical conditions in Mexico could pose an even greater obstacle than their Round of 32 opponents.
England Face Tough Test Against In-Form Mexico
Mexico have emerged as one of the tournament’s most impressive teams, winning all four of their matches so far while benefiting from passionate home support throughout the competition.
England, meanwhile, have shown signs of vulnerability despite reaching the knockout stage. The Three Lions were held to a goalless draw by Ghana during the group stage and needed a dramatic late comeback to overcome DR Congo.
The Round of 16 clash now presents a significantly tougher challenge as England travel outside the United States for the first time in the tournament.
Why Mexico City’s Altitude Is a Major Concern
The match will take place at the historic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, which sits more than 7,200 feet above sea level. At such elevations, oxygen levels are lower, making physical exertion significantly more demanding for athletes who are not acclimatized.
Sports science experts generally recommend several days, and sometimes more than a week, for athletes to properly adjust to high-altitude conditions. England, however, will have only a few days between matches before facing Mexico.
Having played all of their previous World Cup matches in the United States, Tuchel’s squad has had no opportunity to gradually adapt to the environmental conditions they will encounter in Mexico City.
Thomas Tuchel Admits England Cannot Fully Adapt
Speaking after England’s victory over DR Congo, Tuchel acknowledged the significant challenge posed by the altitude.
“The altitude will be a big disadvantage because we cannot physically adapt to it. It just takes too much time. We have only three days between these matches. It’s physically just not possible to adapt to the altitude,” Tuchel said.
The German manager also admitted that the conditions give Mexico a natural advantage heading into the knockout encounter.
“That is just a huge advantage that Mexico will have. More obstacles may come, but we are ready for that. This is just something with which we will have to deal. And I think we showed the attitude that we are ready for that,” he added.
Kane’s Heroics Saved England
England’s progression was far from straightforward. DR Congo stunned the Three Lions early in their Round of 32 clash and looked set for a famous upset before tactical changes transformed the match.
Substitute Anthony Gordon played a crucial role, providing assists for both of Harry Kane’s goals as England turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 victory during the final 15 minutes.
The comeback ensured England avoided one of the biggest shocks of the tournament and kept their hopes of ending a long World Cup drought alive.
Tuchel Dismisses Pressure Narrative
England have not won the FIFA World Cup since their historic triumph in 1966, leading many observers to suggest that pressure could weigh heavily on the current squad.
Tuchel, however, rejected the notion that his players are burdened by expectations.
“I did not see any of that. It would be so easy to give in and to accept that narrative. I didn’t see any of that, and that is a very, very good sign,” Tuchel said.
Round of 16 Showdown Awaits
England and Mexico will meet at Estadio Azteca on Monday in one of the most anticipated Round of 16 fixtures of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
While England possess experience and attacking quality led by Harry Kane, Mexico will enter the contest with home support, perfect tournament form, and the significant advantage of being fully accustomed to the high-altitude conditions.
