Travis Head has become the world’s No.1 Test batter in the latest ICC Rankings, ending Joe Root‘s stay at the summit after the England star endured a disappointing outing against New Zealand at Trent Bridge.
Root managed scores of just 21 and 18 in the series decider, slipping to third in the batting rankings. Australia’s Head capitalized on the opportunity to claim the top spot for the first time in his career, while England’s Harry Brook moved into second place.
There were several other notable changes in the batting rankings. South Africa captain Temba Bavuma, India captain Shubman Gill, and New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra each climbed one position to fifth, sixth, and seventh respectively. Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis dropped to eighth, while India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal slipped to ninth.
New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell edged closer to the top 10 after his match-winning century against England, while opener Devon Conway jumped 14 places to joint 15th. England opener Ben Duckett also climbed three places to 14th following his century in the same Test.
Jasprit Bumrah Returns as Sole No.1 Test Bowler
Jasprit Bumrah reclaimed the outright No.1 position in the ICC Test bowling rankings after New Zealand pacer Matt Henry missed the third Test against England because of injury.
Bumrah now leads the rankings with 870 rating points, moving clear at the top after previously sharing the No.1 spot with Henry.
Bangladesh left-arm spinner Taijul Islam climbed to 11th after reaching the milestone of 300 Test wickets, while West Indies veteran Kemar Roach rose four places to 17th after also completing 300 wickets in the format.
West Indies fast bowler Shamar Joseph jumped nine places to joint 14th alongside India’s Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj, while Zimbabwe pacer Blessing Muzarabani climbed to 19th following an impressive performance against Bangladesh.
Ben Stokes Retires as World’s No.3 Test All-rounder
England captain Ben Stokes finished his international career on a high, taking six wickets and scoring a quickfire 30 in his farewell Test against New Zealand.
His all-round performance lifted him to No.3 in the ICC Test all-rounder rankings before retirement. India’s Ravindra Jadeja retained the No.1 all-rounder ranking ahead of South Africa’s Marco Jansen.
South Africa’s Wiaan Mulder and India’s Washington Sundar also gained one place each to move into seventh and eighth respectively in the all-rounders’ rankings.
