Vaibhav Sooryavanshi India debut remains one of the biggest talking points ahead of India’s upcoming England T20I series. The 15-year-old batting sensation was expected to make history against Ireland but remained on the bench as India suffered a shocking series defeat.
India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has defended the team’s decision, stating that while Sooryavanshi is ready for international cricket, there is no rush to introduce him into the playing XI.
Why did India not pick Vaibhav Sooryavanshi against Ireland?
Sooryavanshi was included in India’s squad after a remarkable run of performances in the IPL 2026 season and for India A. However, the youngster did not feature in either of the two T20Is against Ireland.
India backed experienced players including Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma despite their struggles. Samson, who played a key role in India’s T20 World Cup 2026 triumph, scored only 5 and 0 in the Ireland series.
Meanwhile, Sooryavanshi entered the series with huge momentum after smashing the fastest List-A fifty in history. He reached the milestone in just 11 balls against Sri Lanka A and narrowly missed the fastest List-A century after being dismissed for 94 off 29 deliveries.
Ryan ten Doeschate explains India’s decision
Speaking after India’s series loss, Ryan ten Doeschate praised Sooryavanshi’s ability but explained why the team decided to continue with established players.
“He’s absolutely ready to play international cricket, there’s no doubt about that. But also, it’s not a question to say you can leave Sanju Samson out,” Doeschate said.
The assistant coach highlighted that India wants to give players confidence and a longer opportunity during the new era under captain Shreyas Iyer.
“As ready as Vaibhav is and as excited as we are and you are to see him play, he’s going to have to go through the same process as everyone else and bide his time,” he added.
Will Vaibhav Sooryavanshi debut against England?
India’s decision has created similarities with the situation involving Sanju Samson during the T20 World Cup 2026. Despite early struggles, Samson eventually got his chance and played an important role in India’s title-winning campaign.
Sooryavanshi remains part of India’s T20I squad for the England tour and could still make his international debut during the five-match series.
History waiting for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
If selected, Sooryavanshi could become India’s youngest-ever international debutant. At just 15 years and three months old, the Bihar-born batter has already created global attention with his fearless batting style.
However, India’s team management appears determined to manage his entry carefully, balancing his talent with long-term development.
