Google has started testing a new fashion and lifestyle discovery section inside its Google Pay app in India, introducing personalised product recommendations, virtual try-on tools and image-based search. Called Discover, the feature gives users a dedicated space to explore clothing trends and find products based on their style preferences.
The pilot is currently available to a limited number of users as Google gathers feedback. The experience is powered by Google AI and draws on the company’s Shopping Graph, which contains more than 60 billion product listings that are updated regularly.
Google Pay Discover Brings Personalised Fashion Recommendations
The new Discover tab displays fashion and apparel products alongside YouTube videos selected to match users’ style preferences. Its recommendations are personalised using Google activity, subject to the user’s consent and account settings.
Users can browse the feed and tap individual product listings to view details such as available colours, sizes and formats. The feature is designed to bring product discovery and fashion inspiration directly into the Google Pay app.
Google’s Shopping Graph supports the experience by providing access to a large catalogue of product listings across the web. This allows the Discover feed to display a range of products for users exploring different styles.
Virtual Try-On Lets Users Preview Selected Clothing Items
One of the main features of Discover is a virtual try-on tool that allows users to preview how selected clothing items may look and drape on them.
The tool is available through individual product listings. Users can select the virtual try-on option to see a preview before deciding whether to visit the merchant’s website.
Google also plans to introduce pre-generated daily looks in the future. These suggestions are expected to offer complete outfit ideas, expanding the feature beyond individual product previews.
Visual Search Helps Users Find Similar Fashion Products
Discover also includes an image-based search feature that helps users find visually similar products across the web.
Users can take a photograph, upload an existing image or scan an item in the real world to search for similar styles. The feature is intended to make product discovery easier when users have a particular outfit or design in mind but do not know its name or brand.
Instead of relying entirely on text searches, users can use images as the starting point for finding clothing and other fashion products.
Purchases Are Completed on Merchant Websites
Although Discover allows users to browse products and preview selected clothing items, purchases are not completed directly inside Google Pay.
When users select a product, they are redirected to the relevant merchant’s website. They can then complete the purchase through the retailer using a payment method of their choice.
This means Google Pay is being used as a product discovery and shopping exploration platform, while the final transaction takes place on the merchant’s website.
Requirements to Access Google Pay Discover
Users need to meet certain Google Account requirements to access the personalised Discover experience. They must be signed in to Google Pay using a personal Google Account.
Two account settings must also be enabled:
- Web & App Activity: This setting allows Google to use eligible activity associated with the account for personalisation.
- Search Personalization: This setting helps tailor the experience based on the user’s search-related preferences.
The personalised feed uses consented Google activity to suggest products and content. Users who do not have the required settings enabled may not be able to access the full personalised experience.
How to Use Discover on Google Pay
Users who have access to the pilot can follow these steps to explore the new fashion discovery section:
- Update the Google Pay app to its latest version and open it.
- Tap the Discover icon at the bottom of the screen.
- Browse the feed to explore product recommendations based on eligible past activity.
- Select a product to check details such as colour, size and format.
- Choose the Try on option, where available, to preview the clothing item virtually.
- Use the camera option to scan an item or upload a photograph to find visually similar products.
Google Pay Expands Beyond Digital Payments With Discover
The Discover pilot adds fashion and lifestyle product exploration to Google Pay’s existing payment-focused experience in India. By combining personalised recommendations, virtual try-on and visual search, Google is testing new ways for users to discover products without first visiting multiple shopping websites.
However, the feature remains limited to a selected group of users during the pilot phase. Google is collecting feedback as it tests the experience, while purchases continue to be completed through external merchant websites.
