Mystery Object Over Iran Revives Black Manta Theory

A mysterious object spotted in the skies over Iran has triggered a fresh wave of speculation about an alleged American aircraft known in UFO lore as the “Black Manta.” Videos circulating from Tehran and Zahedan appear to show unusual objects or clusters of lights moving through the night sky, prompting questions about whether they were drones, aircraft, illuminated objects or something else.

The sightings come amid renewed fighting between the United States and Iran, adding an unusually charged backdrop to footage that might otherwise have attracted little attention. Some observers have connected the sightings to long-running claims about a highly classified US aircraft called the TR-3B, allegedly nicknamed the “Black Manta.”

There is, however, a crucial distinction between the sightings and the theory surrounding them: no public evidence establishes that the objects seen over Iran were TR-3B aircraft, and there is no independently verified evidence confirming that an aircraft officially known as the “Black Manta” exists.

The latest episode has nevertheless revived a decades-old aviation mystery involving reports of large, dark, triangular objects capable of apparently silent movement and unusual manoeuvres.

What was spotted over Iran?

The first reported sighting occurred near Tehran’s Azadegan Expressway on September 20. Videos shared online appeared to show a large object moving through the night sky with multiple coloured lights.

Descriptions of the object varied, with some observers comparing its outline to a crescent or unusual aircraft rather than a conventional airplane or helicopter. Its apparent size and unusual lighting quickly became the focus of online discussion.

A second video emerged on September 21 from Zahedan in southeastern Iran. That footage appeared to show a strange cluster of lights moving across the sky.

The available footage does not by itself establish the object’s size, altitude, speed or identity. Night-time video can make distant aircraft, drones, balloons and other objects appear considerably larger or stranger than they are, particularly when bright lights are captured against a dark sky.

Iranian authorities had not publicly provided a definitive explanation for the sightings at the time the videos generated widespread speculation.

Drone, illuminated object or something else?

The unusual appearance of the object has produced several competing explanations.

Some observers suggested that the Tehran sighting could involve an illuminated kite or another relatively ordinary object viewed under unusual conditions. Others argued that the apparent dimensions made such an explanation less convincing.

Drones have also emerged as a plausible theory, particularly given the military conflict and the widespread use of unmanned aerial systems in modern warfare. A drone equipped with multiple lights could produce unusual footage, especially when filmed from a distance.

Other theories have gone much further, with some social-media users describing the objects as unidentified or even extraterrestrial. There is currently no evidence supporting an extraterrestrial explanation.

The most dramatic theory has focused on the alleged American “Black Manta” aircraft. But the lack of verified information means the sightings should not be treated as evidence that the aircraft was operating over Iran.

Why the ‘Black Manta’ theory has returned

The latest speculation has gained additional momentum because of comments attributed to US President Donald Trump about American military capabilities.

Trump recently said the United States possessed “weapons that nobody has ever seen before” and that knowledge of some of those capabilities was limited to a select group. His remarks came while he was threatening severe consequences for Iran during the ongoing confrontation.

Those comments have been interpreted by some observers as potentially referring to classified technologies. They do not, however, identify a TR-3B or confirm the existence of a “Black Manta” aircraft.

The timing of the comments and the Iranian sightings has nevertheless provided new fuel for a theory that has circulated for decades.

What is the alleged TR-3B ‘Black Manta’?

The TR-3B “Black Manta” is generally described in UFO and secret-aircraft lore as a large, black, triangular or unconventional aircraft capable of extremely quiet flight and unusual manoeuvres.

Accounts from alleged witnesses have described an aircraft or object with a prominent central light, slow hovering capability and the ability to accelerate or change direction in ways that appeared inconsistent with conventional aircraft.

However, the central problem with the Black Manta story remains the same: there is no publicly verified evidence demonstrating that an operational aircraft officially designated TR-3B and known as Black Manta exists.

Images and alleged satellite observations have periodically been presented as evidence, but none has provided definitive confirmation. Many of the claims surrounding the aircraft originate from anonymous reports, speculation, conspiracy literature or interpretations of unidentified sightings.

Where did the anti-gravity claims come from?

One of the most extraordinary elements of the Black Manta legend is the claim that it uses some form of anti-gravity technology.

According to versions of the theory circulated online, the aircraft could supposedly generate a powerful field using nuclear energy and high-pressure plasma. Proponents have suggested that such technology could reduce the effects of gravity and allow the aircraft to perform manoeuvres unavailable to conventional aircraft.

These claims remain speculative. There is no publicly demonstrated aircraft technology that allows a large operational aircraft to cancel or eliminate gravity in the manner described by Black Manta theories.

Plasma technology is a real field of scientific and engineering research, and plasma can interact with electromagnetic fields in measurable ways. That does not establish the much broader claim that a plasma-based system could provide an anti-gravity propulsion mechanism for an aircraft.

Similarly, nuclear power has been studied for aviation applications, but a practical nuclear-powered aircraft capable of the extraordinary performance attributed to the Black Manta has not been publicly demonstrated.

Did a Black Manta appear in an Iranian military image?

The Black Manta story received renewed attention in 2021 after Iranian media published an image showing what appeared to be a triangular object aboard a US aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean.

The image was circulated by Iran’s Tasnim News Agency, which has links to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Reports surrounding the image speculated that the object could be connected to the alleged TR-3 aircraft.

That image became part of the wider collection of material used by proponents of the Black Manta theory. It did not, however, establish the aircraft’s identity or prove that a TR-3B exists.

Images of unusual objects can be particularly difficult to interpret without information about the camera, distance, perspective, lighting and circumstances under which they were captured.

What did the National Institute of Discovery Science investigate?

One of the more frequently cited investigations connected to triangular aircraft sightings was conducted by the National Institute of Discovery Science, or NIDS.

The Las Vegas-based research group investigated reports of unusual aerial objects before it was disbanded in 2004. It collected more than 150 reports from locations including the United States, Canada and Europe.

Accounts examined by the organisation included reports of large, dark and apparently silent triangular objects. Some reports described objects capable of remaining stationary before moving rapidly.

Interpretations of these reports contributed to theories that the objects could represent advanced aircraft involved in intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions.

But the reports did not independently establish the existence of a TR-3B Black Manta. Witness testimony and unexplained observations can document that people saw something unusual without establishing what the object actually was.

The real history of secret US aircraft

The Black Manta theory has survived partly because the United States has a documented history of developing aircraft that remained secret for years.

One of the clearest examples is the F-117 Nighthawk. Developed as a stealth attack aircraft, the F-117 had an unusual angular design that made it look unlike conventional aircraft of its era.

Although sightings of the aircraft were reported before its official public unveiling, the US government did not publicly acknowledge the F-117 until 1988. The aircraft’s existence was therefore classified for years even as occasional observations generated speculation.

The F-117 provides an important historical lesson: classified military aircraft are real, and governments can keep advanced aviation programs secret for extended periods. But that historical fact does not automatically validate every claim about an unidentified aircraft.

Modern military aviation also includes stealth drones, reconnaissance platforms and other systems whose capabilities may not be publicly disclosed. That makes it possible for genuine military technology to appear unfamiliar without requiring an extraordinary explanation.

The 1976 Tehran UFO incident

The latest sightings have also revived memories of one of the most famous UFO incidents associated with Iran.

On September 19, 1976, Iranian authorities reported an unusual object over Tehran. Iranian F-4 Phantom fighter jets were dispatched to investigate after reports of a bright object in the sky.

Accounts of the incident later described unusual lights and objects associated with the sighting. One of the pilots reportedly said the object appeared to release glowing objects that moved around his aircraft.

The incident subsequently appeared in US government records and became one of the better-known historical UFO cases involving military pilots.

Despite decades of interest, the identity of the object has never been conclusively established. The episode remains an example of how unexplained aerial observations can develop into enduring aviation mysteries when definitive evidence is unavailable.

Why the latest Iran sightings are difficult to verify

Determining the identity of an object from short social-media videos is especially difficult during an active military conflict.

There can be multiple aircraft and unmanned systems operating in the same airspace, while explosions, flares, air-defence systems and other sources of light can create confusing visual effects.

Video compression can further distort lights and outlines. Without reliable information about the camera position, altitude, distance and direction of Travel, estimates of an object’s size and speed can also be highly uncertain.

That means a striking video may establish that something was observed without establishing exactly what that something was.

Could the object really be the ‘Black Manta’?

There is currently no public evidence demonstrating that the objects seen over Iran were the alleged TR-3B “Black Manta.” There is also no publicly confirmed evidence establishing that an aircraft officially operating under that name exists.

The theory is partly sustained by a combination of unexplained sightings, historical knowledge of secret US aviation programs and claims about technologies that have not been publicly demonstrated.

The existence of genuinely classified aircraft means that secrecy in military aviation is not unusual. At the same time, secrecy alone cannot be used to confirm a particular unidentified object as a secret aircraft.

The most reliable conclusion for now is therefore that the Iranian sightings remain unidentified. They could ultimately be explained by conventional aircraft, drones, illuminated objects or another known technology, but the available footage does not provide enough information to make that determination with confidence.

The Black Manta remains an aviation mystery

The strange objects seen over Iran have once again brought the alleged Black Manta into the spotlight, particularly because they appeared during a period of intense US-Iranian military confrontation.

For enthusiasts of secret aviation programs and unexplained aerial sightings, the timing is likely to keep speculation alive. But the distinction between a documented secret aircraft such as the F-117 and the unverified Black Manta legend remains important.

Until credible evidence establishes the identity of the objects seen over Tehran and Zahedan, or independently confirms the existence and capabilities of a TR-3B aircraft, the Black Manta explanation remains speculation rather than an established fact.

For now, the skies over Iran have produced another unexplained sighting, adding a new chapter to a mystery that has followed reports of unusual triangular aircraft for decades.
