US President Donald Trump has announced plans to establish a new military testing facility in Montana, describing it as a defense “super range” designed to test advanced weapons and emerging military technologies, including autonomous weapons, space systems, electronic warfare and hypersonic weapons.
Trump made the announcement on Wednesday, October 14, during a campaign event in Kalispell, Montana. The visit was part of his broader tour supporting Republican candidates ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, in which control of Congress will be contested.
Trump Outlines Plans for Advanced Military Testing
Speaking to attendees in Kalispell, Trump said the US Department of War would establish the new testing range in Montana to support the development and evaluation of advanced defense technologies.
“I’m pleased to inform you and announce that right here in Montana, the Department of War is going to establish a new super range for testing advanced weapons and technologies,” Trump said, identifying autonomous weapons, space technology, electronic warfare, supersonic weapons and hypersonic systems as areas of focus.
Trump added that the project would help maintain the strength of the US Military, saying Montana would help ensure that the American military “always reigns supreme.”
However, the president did not provide details about the facility’s location, construction schedule, budget or expected operational start date. He also did not explain whether the initiative would involve existing aerospace and defense testing infrastructure in the state.
Montana Already Has Aerospace and Defense Testing Facilities
Montana is already home to the Montana Spaceport & Test Range and the associated Limestone Hills Innovation & Test Campus. The initiative combines public and private sector involvement to promote testing facilities and infrastructure for commercial, civil and military applications.
It remains unclear whether the newly announced Pentagon project will be connected to these existing facilities or developed as a separate initiative.
Trump did not provide information about potential partnerships, the organizations expected to operate the new range or the resources required to establish it.
Why Advanced Weapons Testing Is Becoming a Military Priority
Autonomous weapons, space-based systems, electronic warfare and hypersonic technology are increasingly important to military planning as countries seek new ways to improve operational capabilities and respond to emerging security challenges.
Autonomous weapons and artificial intelligence-enabled platforms can support military operations with less direct involvement from personnel. Drones and other automated systems may also offer lower-cost alternatives for certain missions, although their capabilities and risks depend on the technology and how it is deployed.
Space systems are important for communications, navigation and surveillance, while electronic warfare technologies can be used to disrupt, deceive or defend against electronic systems. Testing these capabilities helps military planners evaluate performance under different operating conditions.
Supersonic and hypersonic weapons are another area of interest. Supersonic weapons travel faster than the speed of sound, or Mach 1, while hypersonic weapons travel at speeds exceeding Mach 5. Their high speeds and flight characteristics present distinct challenges for detection, tracking and defense.
Trump’s Previous Push for Space Defense
The Montana announcement follows Trump’s previous emphasis on strengthening US space defense capabilities. In 2019, during his first presidential term, the United States established the Space Force as a separate branch of the armed forces.
The Space Force is responsible for organizing, training and equipping personnel to conduct military operations in space. The broader development of space-related defense capabilities has increased attention on technologies that support satellite operations, communications and protection of space-based assets.
The proposed Montana testing range could provide another facility for evaluating emerging military technologies, although the administration has not released enough information to establish its precise role within the Pentagon’s wider defense plans.
Announcement Comes Ahead of US Midterm Elections
Trump’s announcement was made during a campaign stop in Kalispell, a city of approximately 30,000 people located about 200 miles (320 km) northwest of Montana’s capital, Helena.
The visit formed part of a wider effort to support Republican candidates before the November 3 midterm elections. All 435 seats in the US House of Representatives and 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats are scheduled to be contested.
Trump has used campaign appearances in multiple states to announce government projects and highlight policy priorities. The Montana defense initiative was presented as a step toward advancing US military technology and capabilities.
Further details about the project’s funding, timeline, infrastructure and relationship with existing testing facilities have yet to be announced.
