Former India cricketer and commentator Aakash Chopra has shared his views on the reported trade discussions between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) involving all-rounder Hardik Pandya ahead of the IPL 2027 season. Reacting to speculation about a possible high-profile swap, Chopra suggested that Mumbai could benefit significantly from adding left-arm fast bowler Arshdeep Singh to an attack already featuring Jasprit Bumrah.
According to the reports, the proposed deal would see Hardik Pandya move from Mumbai Indians to Punjab Kings, while Arshdeep Singh and wicketkeeper-batter Vishnu Vinod would join the five-time IPL champions. Although the discussions have reportedly reached an advanced stage, the trade remains unconfirmed.
Chopra examined the potential impact of the deal in a video shared on his X account. He questioned which franchise would benefit more from the proposed exchange and suggested that the move could trigger further trades involving other players.
“Hardik Pandya to Punjab Kings, huh? And from Punjab Kings, Arshdeep Singh and Vishnu Vinod to Mumbai Indians. I mean, rumors are circulating that it is a very advanced-level conversation, and something like this could happen,” Chopra said.
He also highlighted the possibility of Mumbai Indians building a formidable pace attack by bringing Arshdeep into the same squad as Bumrah. Deepak Chahar and Corbin Bosch are also part of the bowling options mentioned in the discussion.
“See, in my opinion, actually Mumbai Indians will be quite happy if, alongside Bumrah, they get Arshdeep; along with them, Deepak Chahar is there, and Corbin Bosch you already have. I mean, uh… the numbers will become massive, man. Bumrah and Arshdeep in the same team this is, brother, Team India’s bowling line-up! What better could you ask for than this?” Chopra added.
Why Aakash Chopra believes Mumbai Indians could benefit
The main attraction of the reported trade for Mumbai Indians would be the possibility of pairing two of India’s leading fast bowlers in the same IPL attack. Bumrah’s presence already gives Mumbai an experienced pace option, while Arshdeep’s left-arm angle could provide a different dimension to their bowling combination.
Chopra believes that adding Arshdeep alongside Bumrah would give Mumbai a strong pace-bowling foundation. With Deepak Chahar and Corbin Bosch also among the options discussed, the franchise could have several combinations available across different match situations.
Arshdeep’s potential arrival would also give Mumbai another Indian fast-bowling option. His left-arm pace could complement Bumrah’s bowling style, allowing the team to vary its attack during the powerplay and death overs.
However, the proposed deal would also mean losing Pandya, who offers both batting and bowling value. His role as an all-rounder and his leadership experience make his possible departure a significant squad decision for Mumbai.
Aakash Chopra questions Punjab Kings’ squad balance
While Chopra discussed the potential advantages for Mumbai Indians, he also raised concerns about what Punjab Kings could lose by allowing Arshdeep Singh to leave. He pointed out that bowling has been an area of concern for Punjab and suggested that giving up one of their key Indian fast bowlers could create another problem for the franchise.
Chopra also questioned whether Punjab would have too many all-rounders if Pandya joined the squad. The franchise already has several players who can contribute with both bat and ball, including Marcus Stoinis, Marco Jansen, Azmatullah Omarzai and Suryansh Shedge.
“If something like this happens — because Punjab’s weakness itself is their bowling. And if they let Arshdeep go from that, then they will have to make some other trades. Then maybe Marcus Stoinis will have to be let go, because how many all-rounders do you need? Marcus Stoinis, Marco Jansen, Azmatullah Omarzai, uh, you also have Suryansh Shedge. I mean, how many all-rounders plus Hardik Pandya? I mean, what will you do with so many all-rounders?” Chopra remarked.
His concern centres on squad balance. Adding Pandya could strengthen Punjab’s all-rounder options, but losing Arshdeep might leave the team needing another frontline fast bowler. Chopra suggested that Punjab may have to consider additional trades to address that potential gap.
Marcus Stoinis trade could become part of a bigger deal
Chopra also discussed the possibility of Marcus Stoinis moving to another franchise if Punjab pursue the reported Hardik Pandya deal. He identified Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Gujarat Titans (GT) as possible destinations, suggesting that both teams could offer fast-bowling options while looking for middle-order batting support.
“So give Marcus Stoinis to someone else. Could it be LSG? Could it be, uh… I mean, the Gujarat team? Because Gujarat has fast bowlers to offer; Lucknow has fast bowlers to offer. Both need a batter in the middle order,” he added.
Reports have also linked Stoinis with a possible move to Lucknow or Gujarat in exchange for an Indian fast bowler. Such a deal could help Punjab address the bowling depth concerns that Chopra highlighted. However, no additional trade involving Stoinis has been confirmed.
The potential chain of transfers shows how one marquee player swap could influence the squad plans of multiple IPL franchises. If the Hardik-Arshdeep proposal progresses, Punjab may need to reassess its combination of all-rounders and specialist bowlers before the next season.
Hardik Pandya’s IPL future remains uncertain
Hardik Pandya has been at the centre of transfer speculation ahead of IPL 2027. The 33-year-old all-rounder has reportedly attracted interest from other franchises, with previous rumours also mentioning Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants as possible destinations.
His recurring injury concerns since IPL 2026 have added another dimension to discussions about his future. Nevertheless, the reported Punjab proposal is said to involve the franchise taking him on specifically as an all-rounder rather than changing its leadership structure.
According to the reports, Shreyas Iyer would continue as Punjab Kings captain if Pandya joined the team. This would allow Punjab to add another experienced all-rounder without making a reported change to its captaincy plans.
For Mumbai, meanwhile, the potential arrival of Arshdeep and Vishnu Vinod would represent a change in squad composition. The franchise would need to weigh the value of strengthening its bowling attack against the loss of Pandya’s all-round contributions.
IPL 2027 mini-auction scheduled for December 16
The reported trade discussions come ahead of the IPL 2027 mini-auction, which is scheduled to take place on December 16 in Goa. Franchises will be working on their squad combinations and identifying areas that need strengthening before the auction.
For now, the proposed Hardik Pandya-Arshdeep Singh exchange remains a matter of speculation. Chopra’s comments have brought attention to the possible benefits for Mumbai Indians and the squad-balance questions Punjab Kings could face if the deal goes through.
Any confirmed trade involving Pandya, Arshdeep or Vishnu Vinod could significantly influence the plans of both franchises ahead of IPL 2027. Until an official announcement is made, the reported swap and any potential follow-up deals involving Marcus Stoinis should be treated as unconfirmed.
