The best imports do more than score points. They solve problems. For NLEX, Deonte Burton made his presence felt in nearly every aspect of the game during Game 1 of the PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup quarterfinals.

The former NBA player finished with 27 points, 11 rebounds, and six combined steals and blocks to lead the NLEX Road Warriors to a 97-92 victory over Phoenix Super LPG on Sunday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo. While his two fourth-quarter blocks stood out as defining moments, Burton’s overall contribution proved just as important, with his impact extending well beyond scoring.

Deonte Burton’s offensive versatility gives NLEX an edge

Burton’s ability to create his own shot through isolation plays and knock down catch-and-shoot opportunities was never in doubt. However, head coach Jimmy Alapag also found ways to maximize the import’s physical advantages by using cross screens to establish deeper post position.

A cross screen is an off-ball action in which a player moves across the court to set a screen for a teammate, helping them get open or establish a more favorable position near the basket. In Burton’s case, NLEX used the play to get him closer to the rim, where his strength and physicality could create difficult matchups for Phoenix’s defenders.

These actions also forced the Fuel Masters to make difficult defensive decisions. They could allow Burton to attack one-on-one or send additional defenders to disrupt his scoring opportunities. Either approach presented potential advantages for NLEX, particularly when help defense left gaps for other Road Warriors to exploit.

Although Burton recorded just two assists, his offensive presence helped create opportunities for his teammates to attack the paint and drive toward the basket. By occupying defenders and drawing attention from potential help defenders, he helped tilt Phoenix’s defensive structure and opened space for others to operate.

NLEX’s second-half struggles highlight areas for improvement

Despite Burton’s strong performance, NLEX struggled to maintain its offensive rhythm after halftime. The Road Warriors scored just 41 points in the second half, allowing Phoenix to fight its way back into contention and turn the game into a tense finish.

The second-half slowdown also exposed NLEX’s tendency to rely too heavily on one-on-one basketball. While individual shot-making can be valuable in the playoffs, sustained offensive success requires better ball movement, effective spacing, and consistent execution against a prepared defense.

Alapag acknowledged that his team had room for improvement despite securing the opening win of the series.

“Every team in the playoffs is a quality team and it requires your best. I don’t think we were at our best tonight, but we did enough to win,” Alapag said.

Burton’s defensive impact becomes crucial for NLEX

While Burton carries a significant offensive workload, his defensive responsibilities are equally important, especially given NLEX’s lack of size in the frontcourt. His athleticism and ability to protect the rim provide the Road Warriors with an additional layer of defensive support.

Burton’s three blocks were among the most visible examples of his defensive influence. However, his value extended beyond the box score. When Phoenix’s ball-handlers managed to get past their initial defenders, Burton could rotate toward the basket and challenge their attempts to finish.

This type of defensive responsibility is known as the low-man role. It involves a weak-side defender stepping into the paint to help when an opposing player beats the primary defender off the dribble. With Burton providing that support, reaching the basket did not necessarily guarantee Phoenix an easy scoring opportunity.

Even when Burton failed to record a block, his presence near the rim could force drivers to change their shots, hesitate, or look for another option. That ability to disrupt attacking possessions gave NLEX valuable defensive flexibility during a closely contested playoff game.

NLEX must improve perimeter defense despite Burton’s heroics

However, Burton cannot be expected to cover every defensive mistake as the series progresses. Phoenix has capable perimeter threats in Ricci Rivero and Gian Mamuyac, making it essential for NLEX to improve its defense at the point of attack and prevent opponents from consistently penetrating the paint.

If the Road Warriors continue allowing opposing ball-handlers to get past their initial defenders, Burton could be forced into repeated rotations, creating opportunities elsewhere for Phoenix. Better perimeter containment would help NLEX make more efficient use of Burton’s shot-blocking ability while reducing the pressure on its import to clean up every breakdown.

Burton’s all-around performance nevertheless gives NLEX a valuable advantage heading into the next game. His scoring, rebounding, physicality, and rim protection allow him to influence the contest on both ends of the floor.

In a tight playoff series, an import who can do more than score can make the difference between surviving a close game and letting victory slip away. For NLEX, Burton’s versatility was a major factor in securing Game 1, and it could remain crucial as the Road Warriors look to build on their early lead.
