Kylian Mbappe produced one of the most emotional moments of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after celebrating France’s opening goal against Sweden with head coach Didier Deschamps during their Round of 32 clash.
Instead of celebrating with the fans, Mbappe sprinted straight to the touchline and embraced Deschamps, who had only returned to the France camp four days earlier after attending his mother’s funeral. The touching gesture was soon joined by the rest of the French squad, who surrounded their coach in a collective show of support.
France went on to secure a convincing 3-0 victory over Sweden to book their place in the Round of 16, but it was Mbappe’s heartfelt celebration that became the defining image of the night.
The emotional moment also highlighted the close bond between Deschamps and his captain. Just as France’s 1998 World Cup-winning team was built around the partnership between coach Aime Jacquet and captain Deschamps, the current squad appears to have found a similar leadership connection between Deschamps and Mbappe.
The Real Madrid superstar has been in sensational form throughout the tournament, scoring six goals and providing two assists while leading France’s charge toward another World Cup title.
Mbappe Explains Emotional Celebration
Speaking after the match, Mbappe said supporting Deschamps during a difficult personal period was a natural reaction from the entire squad.
“The tribute to Didier Deschamps? That’s the DNA of this group. We’re all in this together.”
“The coach has gone through something that, unfortunately, everyone experiences at some point in life. It’s incredibly difficult. He’ll never be alone with us. We’ll support him,” Mbappe said.
Mbappe also stressed that France remain fully focused on their objective of winning the tournament.
“I’m fully aware of what’s at stake, where I am and what I have to do. The team knows what it has to do here as well,” he added.
Deschamps substituted Mbappe in the 84th minute with the result already secured, and the France manager responded by bowing toward his captain as he left the pitch, earning a standing ovation from the crowd.
France will next face Paraguay in the Round of 16 after the South American side stunned Germany in the previous round.
