Sunil Gavaskar has urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to ensure complete transparency in player trades and transfers in the Indian Premier League (IPL). With franchises increasingly conducting high-profile player movements outside the traditional auction process, Gavaskar believes greater clarity around the financial details is now essential.
The IPL has evolved significantly since its early years, with franchises now planning their squads throughout the year. Recent examples include Sanju Samson’s move to Chennai Super Kings ahead of the 2026 season and the subsequent exchange involving Rishabh Pant and Kuldeep Yadav between Lucknow Super Giants and Delhi Capitals.
Gavaskar wants IPL trade figures made public
According to Gavaskar, the biggest concern with IPL trades is that the financial details are currently known only to the concerned franchises, the player involved and the BCCI.
He argued that other franchises should also have access to those numbers because every team operates under a salary-cap structure. Without publicly available figures, other teams may not be able to determine whether the applicable financial rules were properly followed.
Gavaskar believes that making the numbers public would remove unnecessary uncertainty and strengthen confidence in the IPL’s trading system.
“In such a situation, the other franchises don’t know if the salary cap that every franchise has for its squad was maintained or breached. That’s why it’s important for full transparency that the numbers are also out in the public domain,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for Mid-Day.
‘No finger pointing’ at the IPL
The former India captain also stressed that transparency is important because of the IPL’s global stature. He described the tournament as the world’s leading T20 league and argued that its growing influence makes maintaining credibility even more important.
Gavaskar believes that publishing the relevant financial details would help prevent unnecessary controversy and accusations surrounding player trades.
“The IPL is the greatest T20 league in the world, and it’s therefore crucial that full transparency is maintained so that there’s no finger-pointing at it from those jealous of it,” he wrote.
Hardik Pandya remains part of transfer speculation
Gavaskar’s comments come amid renewed speculation surrounding Hardik Pandya. The all-rounder previously made one of the biggest moves in IPL history when he left Gujarat Titans for Mumbai Indians before the 2024 season.
There has now been speculation that Pandya could potentially leave Mumbai Indians, although no concrete confirmation regarding such a move has been made public.
The uncertainty surrounding high-profile players makes Gavaskar’s call for greater transparency particularly relevant. If a major trade takes place, publicly disclosing the financial structure could give all franchises and supporters a clearer understanding of how the transaction fits within IPL regulations.
Recent IPL player movements highlight the changing landscape
Player trading has become increasingly important in the IPL, with franchises no longer relying exclusively on the annual auction to reshape their squads.
Rishabh Pant’s move from Lucknow Super Giants to Delhi Capitals is another major example. Pant stepped down as LSG captain before leaving the franchise, while Kuldeep Yadav moved in the opposite direction as part of the player movement between the teams.
These developments demonstrate how important transfer windows have become for IPL squad building. As the value and profile of such moves continue to rise, Gavaskar’s demand for financial transparency could become an important part of the wider discussion around the league’s future.
Why transparency matters for the IPL
Greater transparency could help address several concerns surrounding player trades. Publicly available figures could make it easier for franchises and fans to understand how deals affect salary-cap calculations and whether the rules are being applied consistently.
It could also reduce speculation when major players change teams, particularly when the move involves prominent franchises or high-value contracts.
For Gavaskar, the issue is ultimately about protecting the reputation of a tournament that has become one of cricket’s most influential competitions. His message to the BCCI is clear: as player transfers become more significant, the IPL’s processes should be equally clear to everyone involved.
