European T20 Premier League (ETPL) has made an impressive start to its inaugural ICC-sanctioned season, attracting strong crowds and producing several standout performances from international cricket stars.

The tournament has already delivered a remarkable bowling milestone, with three experienced international bowlers recording the best T20 figures of their respective careers during the opening week.

New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult, South African pacer Anrich Nortje and New Zealand all-rounder Mitchell Santner each claimed five-wicket hauls, highlighting the competitive standard of the new European T20 competition.

Trent Boult stars with career-best T20 figures

Trent Boult set the early benchmark in the ETPL when he returned outstanding figures of 5/24 against Glasgow Cosmic on August 27.

The performance surpassed his previous best T20 bowling figures of 4/13, which he had recorded against Sri Lanka in 2022. Boult’s ability to make an immediate impact has added significant quality to the tournament.

Speaking about his performance, Boult explained that personal records are not usually the primary objective for a bowler. Instead, he focuses on understanding the conditions, executing his plans and helping his team win.

Anrich Nortje produces another five-wicket haul

South Africa’s Anrich Nortje followed Boult’s performance with another remarkable spell. Playing for Rotterdam Dockers, Nortje claimed 5/11 against Belfast Wolves on August 29.

The figures represented a new T20 career best for the fast bowler, improving on his previous best of 4/7 against Sri Lanka in 2024.

Nortje said it was special to take five wickets in a T20 match because such performances do not happen frequently. He also credited the conditions and his focus on using them effectively for the team.

Mitchell Santner completes the remarkable trio

New Zealand’s Mitchell Santner completed the trio of career-best performances on August 30. The Edinburgh Castle Rockers captain produced figures of 5/16 against Dublin Guardian.

Santner’s spell surpassed his previous T20 best of 4/11 against India in 2016. His performance further underlined the quality of bowling on display during the opening week of the ETPL.

Santner also highlighted the unique nature of the tournament, which brings together international players, local European talent and different cricketing styles.
