Suryakumar Yadav Breaks Silence on India Snub After T20 World Cup 2026

Suryakumar Yadav has opened up about the emotional impact of being dropped from the Indian team after the T20 World Cup 2026 triumph. The former India T20I captain admitted that he was completely shocked by the selectors’ decision and spent nearly 40-50 days away from cricket before finding the motivation to return to training.

The 35-year-old batter explained that he had been preparing to lead India into the next phase of their T20I journey, including the 2028 Olympics and another T20 World Cup. However, the selectors ultimately decided to move in a different direction after India’s World Cup success.

Speaking to former India cricketer Aakash Chopra on YouTube, Suryakumar revealed that he initially struggled to understand what his next step should be after his omission from the national team.

He said that he spent around 40-50 days at home doing very little and was unsure whether he wanted to continue playing cricket. The unexpected decision left him with plenty of questions about his future.

Suryakumar eventually found motivation through a conversation with his wife, Devisha Shetty. She reminded him about the passion that had driven him to take up cricket in the first place and encouraged him to rediscover that same love for the game.

The former captain also explained that he has traditionally tried to maintain a positive attitude during difficult periods. Even when situations have not gone his way, he has preferred to smile rather than react emotionally.

Former India captain did not expect the decision

Suryakumar admitted that being dropped was particularly difficult because he believed he was preparing to take the Indian team forward for another two years.

He had been looking ahead to future challenges, including the 2028 Olympics and the next T20 World Cup. However, he acknowledged that his own expectations and the selectors’ plans were different.

Despite his disappointment, Suryakumar said he respected the decision and did not react negatively. He accepted that the selectors believed another direction was better for the Indian team going forward.

Suryakumar praises Shreyas Iyer after losing captaincy

Following the T20 World Cup 2026, Shreyas Iyer was appointed as India’s new T20I captain. Suryakumar insisted that he never questioned why Iyer had been selected for the leadership role.

The Mumbai batter spoke highly of Iyer, pointing out that they have played a significant amount of cricket together. He described his former teammate as a good player, a good person and a capable captain.

However, Suryakumar acknowledged that he was disappointed because India had enjoyed considerable success during his tenure. The team had not lost a bilateral T20I series during his captaincy and had also won the Asia Cup 2025 and T20 World Cup 2026.

Batting form may have contributed to Suryakumar’s omission

While Suryakumar’s leadership record remained impressive, his recent batting form may have influenced the selectors’ decision. His 2026 Indian Premier League campaign was particularly difficult.

He scored 270 runs in 13 matches at an average of 20.76, a return that fell well below the standards expected from one of India’s most experienced T20 batters.

Despite the setback, Suryakumar’s comments suggest that he is focused on rebuilding his motivation rather than dwelling on the decision. His return to training, encouraged by his wife’s advice, could become an important chapter in the next stage of his cricket career.
