Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Misses Century After Historic Duleep Trophy 92

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi added another remarkable age record to his growing list on Monday, becoming the youngest player to score a half-century in Duleep Trophy history during East Zone’s semifinal against Central Zone in Bengaluru.

The 15-year-old produced an aggressive innings of 92 runs, reaching his fifty from just 42 balls. His dismissal came agonisingly close to a maiden first-class century and left him visibly disappointed as he walked back to the pavilion.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Creates Duleep Trophy History

Born on March 27, 2011, Sooryavanshi was 15 years and 157 days old when he completed his half-century. He surpassed Laxman Singh’s long-standing record from the 1968-69 season.

Laxman Singh had previously held the record after scoring 63 for Central Zone against North Zone at the age of 16 years and 23 days.

Sooryavanshi reached the milestone in spectacular fashion, taking only 42 deliveries to complete his fifty while opening the innings alongside Abhimanyu Easwaran.

Teenager Attacks Central Zone Bowlers

Sooryavanshi began the innings in typically aggressive fashion after East Zone bowled Central Zone out for 266. He struck two boundaries in the opening over and quickly moved to 21 from 14 deliveries.

He continued to score rapidly and reached 31 from 21 balls before moving to 40 off 28 deliveries. The youngster then received a significant reprieve when a top edge was dropped.

Sooryavanshi had already started walking towards the pavilion after believing he had been caught, but the catch was not completed. He used the opportunity effectively and soon brought up his historic half-century.

Sooryavanshi Falls Just Short of Century

After reaching his fifty, Sooryavanshi continued attacking and moved within sight of his first first-class century. He mixed his natural attacking approach with periods of defence, along-the-ground strokes and strike rotation.

However, his impressive innings ended on 92. The young batter attempted to take on Harsh Dubey and clear the leg-side field but holed out to deep mid-wicket.

The dismissal was particularly frustrating because Sooryavanshi had come within eight runs of his century and one run of his existing first-class best of 93, which he scored for Bihar against Meghalaya.

RP Singh Shocked by Sooryavanshi’s Dismissal

Sooryavanshi was visibly upset after his dismissal and slammed his bat as he made his way back. Former India pacer RP Singh was among those watching from the stands and appeared shocked by the way the innings ended.

Ajay Ratra and SS Das were also present and followed the teenager’s impressive performance in the semifinal.

A Significant Red-Ball Milestone for Sooryavanshi

The innings was especially important because Sooryavanshi had not yet produced the same level of consistency in first-class cricket that has characterised his rapid rise in white-ball cricket.

Before this semifinal, he had scored 215 runs from 13 first-class innings at an average of 16.53. His previous first-class highest score was 93 for Bihar against Meghalaya.

His 92 against Central Zone therefore became his highest Duleep Trophy score and his second first-class half-century.

Selectors Get Encouraging Signs

Beyond the runs and age record, Sooryavanshi’s approach to the innings offered encouraging signs for his development in red-ball cricket.

While he maintained his attacking style, there were also passages where he defended patiently, played the ball along the ground and rotated the strike rather than constantly searching for boundaries.

For a teenager still adapting to first-class cricket, those signs could be particularly valuable. His 92 may have fallen short of a century, but the innings demonstrated that Sooryavanshi is beginning to find ways to combine his natural flair with the demands of red-ball cricket.
