More than 4,500 Indian Nationals have been removed from Canada between January and September 2026, marking a record high and making Indians the largest nationality group among people subject to enforced removals during the period.

According to data published by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), 4,526 Indian nationals had been removed from the country by September 30. They accounted for more than 27% of the 16,426 enforced removals recorded across all nationalities.

Indians Account for the Largest Share of Removals

The figures mark the first time since 2020 that Indian nationals have formed the largest country group among people removed from Canada. However, the number recorded in 2020 was considerably lower, with 1,424 Indians among 12,858 total removals.

In the intervening years, Mexican nationals accounted for the largest share of removals by nationality. The latest figures show a significant change, with Indians emerging as the biggest group in the 2026 data.

The previous high for Indian removals was recorded in 2025, when 3,779 Indian nationals were deemed inadmissible and removed from Canada. During the same year, 4,837 Mexican nationals were removed, out of 23,160 total removals.

Indians Also Lead Removals in Progress

Indian nationals also account for the largest group in Canada’s inventory of removals still in progress. The CBSA data lists 11,393 Indians among a total of 52,457 individuals in this category.

This inventory represents cases in which removal proceedings have not yet been completed. The figures indicate that Indian nationals make up a substantial share of both completed removals and pending removal cases.

Three Types of Removal Orders in Canada

Canada has three categories of removal orders, each carrying different conditions on when an individual can return to the country.

1. Deportation Order

A deportation order permanently bars an individual from returning to Canada unless they obtain written authorisation from the authorities. Anyone subject to this order must secure permission before attempting to re-enter the country.

2. Exclusion Order

An exclusion order generally prevents an individual from returning to Canada for one year unless written authorisation is granted. However, the restriction increases to five years when the order is issued because the individual misrepresented themselves, according to the CBSA.

3. Departure Order

A departure order requires an individual to leave Canada within 30 days after the order becomes enforceable. If the person fails to leave within that period, the departure order is converted into a deportation order, the agency stated.

CBSA Says Removals Protect Immigration System

The CBSA said removing people who do not have the legal right to enter or remain in Canada is an important part of maintaining the country’s immigration system.

“Removing individuals who do not have the right to enter or stay in Canada is essential to maintaining the integrity of Canada’s immigration program and to ensuring fairness for those who come to this country lawfully,” the agency said.

The latest figures highlight the scale of Canada’s enforced-removal process in 2026, with Indian nationals accounting for more than one-quarter of all removals recorded by September 30.
