US President Donald Trump and Elon Musk went from political allies to bitter enemies within days, trading public accusations that appeared to end one of the most prominent political partnerships of the 2024 election campaign.

Months later, the relationship has quietly improved. Musk is now back in Trump’s political orbit and is preparing to spend at least $100 million to support Republican efforts in the midterm elections, according to people familiar with the strategy cited by The Wall Street Journal.

The reconciliation was not the result of a single conversation. Instead, it followed months of private outreach, continued connections between their families and allies, carefully timed encounters and practical reasons for both sides to avoid a permanent split.

From political allies to bitter rivals

Musk and Trump developed a close political relationship during the 2024 presidential campaign. Musk became one of Trump’s most prominent supporters and spent nearly $300 million backing Trump’s election effort.

After Trump returned to the White House, Musk moved into the White House complex and became the leading figure behind efforts to reduce the size of the federal government through the Department of Government Efficiency, widely known as DOGE.

But Musk’s role quickly generated controversy inside the administration. Cabinet officials reportedly resented his involvement in their agencies, while his aggressive push to reduce government programmes attracted criticism from people who depended on those services.

Trump initially continued to say that his relationship with Musk was strong. But tensions eventually erupted into a public confrontation.

The June feud that appeared to end their relationship

In June, the disagreements between the two men spilled into an extraordinary public fight on social media.

Musk attacked Trump’s policies and questioned the president’s record, while Trump responded by threatening to cancel government contracts involving Musk’s companies.

The dispute also centred on Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill”, which Musk strongly opposed. Musk described the legislation as a “disgusting abomination” and argued that it would add to the US debt burden.

Trump, meanwhile, accused Musk of turning against the legislation because it removed incentives for electric vehicles.

The feud became increasingly personal. Musk also made an explosive reference to Jeffrey Epstein investigative files, while Trump accused Musk of showing ingratitude after benefiting from the administration’s support.

“Without me, Trump would have lost the election,” Musk wrote during the dispute, pointing to the enormous financial support he had provided during Trump’s 2024 campaign.

Trump’s advisers quietly worked to repair the relationship

Despite the public hostility, Trump’s advisers did not appear willing to let the relationship collapse permanently.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Vice President JD Vance and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles contacted Musk just one day after the confrontation. Their efforts were aimed at lowering tensions and reopening communication.

The initial conversation reportedly went well.

Musk subsequently called Trump early the following week. The conversation was also described as positive, and Musk later acknowledged that some of his comments during the feud had gone too far.

However, the reconciliation was gradual rather than immediate. By September, Trump was reportedly still telling a senior White House official that he was not ready to bring Musk fully back into his inner circle.

Why Trump and Musk had practical reasons to reconcile

The political dispute did not erase the extensive connections between Musk’s companies and the US government.

SpaceX has an important role in national security programmes and NASA missions, creating practical complications for any permanent rupture between Musk and the administration.

During the height of the dispute, Musk threatened to withdraw support for missions to the International Space Station, raising concerns within NASA.

A review of SpaceX’s federal contracts following the confrontation found that many were considered critical to the Defence Department and NASA. Another factor was the continued relationship between Musk and members of Trump’s family.

Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr, remained friendly with Musk even after the public fallout.

Around the time of the breakup, his venture-capital firm, 1789 Capital, invested in Musk’s companies, including xAI, SpaceX and Neuralink.

These continuing relationships provided another channel through which communication could remain open despite the public dispute between Trump and Musk.

JD Vance continued efforts to keep communication open

Vance reportedly remained involved in efforts to preserve communication between Musk and the administration even after the initial reconciliation attempt.

Musk’s decision to abandon plans for a new political party later in the summer was viewed by some Trump advisers as another indication that he wanted to preserve political connections with the administration.

For Trump’s team, maintaining some form of relationship with Musk also had clear political and strategic value given his financial resources, influence and position in the Technology and space industries.

Charlie Kirk’s death became an unexpected turning point

An unexpected event later helped bring Trump and Musk back into the same physical space.

Conservative activist Charlie Kirk had reportedly been attempting to help repair the relationship between the two men before he was shot and killed in September.

Trump and Musk subsequently attended a memorial service for Kirk at an Arizona Football stadium. The two men briefly spoke during the event.

Musk approached Trump’s stadium box, and Trump reportedly patted him on the elbow as Musk left.

The encounter was brief, but it carried symbolic significance after months of public hostility.

Later aboard Air Force One, Trump reportedly discussed the interaction with others and asked what they thought about the exchange.

That night, Musk posted a photograph of himself speaking with Trump at the memorial with the caption, “For Charlie.”

The encounter helped reopen communication between the two men after their relationship had deteriorated dramatically.

Changes inside Trump’s administration also eased tensions

Personnel changes within the administration also contributed to reducing some of the friction surrounding Musk.

Musk had clashed with Trump aide Sergio Gor, who was involved in the administration’s personnel vetting process. Their disagreement reportedly became particularly intense during Musk’s time at DOGE.

Trump later appointed Gor as US ambassador to India, taking him away from Washington and the immediate centre of the dispute.

The relationship is repaired, but not fully restored

Despite the reconciliation, people familiar with the relationship say Trump does not view the relationship as returning to what it was before the feud.

Trump has reportedly told aides that he and Musk will never again be as close as they were before their public confrontation.

Still, the two men now speak roughly once a month, discussing subjects including Artificial Intelligence, China and global affairs.

The relationship has therefore shifted from an intensely personal political alliance to a more pragmatic channel of communication.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Musk plans to contribute at least $100 million to America PAC, the political organisation he created to support Trump-aligned candidates during the 2024 election.

The group is expected to work with MAGA Inc., Trump’s main super PAC, which already holds more than $400 million, according to the report.

Musk’s planned spending is expected to focus on voter turnout and helping Republicans retain control of Congress.

A different Musk from the 2024 campaign

Musk is unlikely to assume the same highly visible political role he played during Trump’s 2024 campaign or during his controversial period leading DOGE.

That distinction may be important for both men. Musk retains enormous financial and political influence, but his earlier involvement in the administration generated significant controversy and contributed to the breakdown of his relationship with Trump.

The emerging arrangement appears to give Musk a way to support Republican candidates financially without returning to the day-to-day role that placed him at the centre of Trump’s administration.

Musk’s planned $100 million contribution would give Republican political operations access to one of the largest individual sources of political spending in the United States.

His financial resources, technology-industry connections and large online following could provide additional support for Republican candidates during the midterm campaign.
