Congress veteran and former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot has demanded an unconditional apology from Rajasthan BJP president Madan Rathore over his controversial remarks about India supporting Pakistan in the event of a war between Pakistan and the United States. The controversy has triggered protests by Congress workers across Rajasthan and renewed political criticism of the BJP leader.
Rathore made the remarks at an event in Jaipur last week, saying India would stand with Pakistan because it was a neighbouring country if a war broke out between Pakistan and the United States. He later claimed he was referring to a cricket match rather than a military conflict and alleged that his statement had been distorted.
Gehlot, however, said Rathore’s subsequent explanations had not addressed the controversy. He called on the Rajasthan BJP chief to acknowledge the impact of his words, express regret and apologise without conditions.
What Did Madan Rathore Say About Pakistan?
Addressing an event in Jaipur, Rathore said, “If a war breaks out between America and Pakistan today, we will stand with Pakistan because it is our neighbour. But when it comes to our differences, we stand with India.”
The statement attracted criticism because it appeared to suggest that India would support Pakistan in a potential conflict with the United States. The remarks became a subject of political debate, with Congress leaders questioning the BJP leader’s choice of words and demanding clarification.
India and Pakistan have a long history of political and military tensions, making public statements about bilateral relations particularly sensitive. Consequently, remarks that appear to suggest support for Pakistan during a conflict can become politically contentious, even when the speaker later offers a different interpretation.
Rathore subsequently said he had been referring to a cricket match between the United States and Pakistan rather than a war. He also maintained that his remarks had been taken out of context and distorted.
His clarification became central to the controversy, with Gehlot arguing that it did not remove the need for an apology.
Ashok Gehlot Says Rathore Must Apologise Without Conditions
Reacting to the controversy on Sunday, Gehlot demanded an unconditional apology from the Rajasthan BJP president. The former chief minister said Rathore’s repeated explanations were making the situation more complicated instead of resolving it.
According to a report by the Press Trust of India (PTI), Gehlot criticised Rathore for blaming the media rather than apologising for the statement.
“But instead of apologising, he is blaming the media and asking why journalists are cornering him. The media is not putting words into his mouth. It is only showing what he actually said,” Gehlot said, according to PTI.
Gehlot maintained that the controversy arose from Rathore’s own words and that the BJP leader should take responsibility for the statement. He argued that an explanation about the intended context was not a substitute for expressing regret.
The Congress leader’s demand centres on an unconditional apology rather than another clarification. He has called on Rathore to acknowledge the controversy and communicate directly with the public about what he said and why.
Gehlot Invokes Pulwama Attack and Terrorism-Related Concerns
Gehlot also linked the public reaction to Rathore’s remarks with India’s history of terrorist attacks and tensions involving Pakistan.
The former Rajasthan chief minister said that the speaker’s intention or the context might have been different, but references to Pakistan could remind people of the 2019 Pulwama terror attack and other incidents in Jammu and Kashmir.
“People cannot forget the killings in terrorist attacks linked to Pakistan. There is widespread anger over his remarks,” Gehlot said.
His comments reflected the Congress leader’s argument that statements concerning Pakistan carry particular sensitivity because of the history of violence and tensions between the two countries.
However, Rathore has maintained that his statement was intended as a reference to cricket rather than a military confrontation. The disagreement over the context and interpretation of the remarks has remained at the centre of the political dispute.
Congress Workers Hold Protests Across Rajasthan
The controversy also prompted demonstrations by Congress workers in Rajasthan. Gehlot said party workers staged protests across the state on Saturday following a call by the Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee.
The demonstrations formed part of the party’s response to Rathore’s remarks, with Congress leaders demanding that the BJP state president apologise.
Gehlot said the BJP would continue to face public criticism until Rathore apologised and explained his statement to the people. He reiterated that subsequent clarifications and criticism of journalists had not resolved the issue.
The protests have brought the dispute beyond an exchange between individual political leaders. By mobilising party workers across Rajasthan, Congress has turned the remarks into a wider state-level political issue.
The BJP leader’s explanation that he was referring to a cricket match remains an important part of the dispute. The competing interpretations have shaped the political response, with Congress insisting on an apology and Rathore arguing that his words were misunderstood.
Why the Remark Has Become a Political Controversy
The controversy highlights how references to India-Pakistan relations can become politically sensitive, particularly when they involve a hypothetical military conflict. Statements about neighbouring countries are often interpreted against the background of diplomatic tensions, security concerns and past attacks.
In this case, the central disagreement is whether Rathore’s words should be understood as a statement about a possible war or as a reference to a cricket match, as he later claimed.
Gehlot has argued that the wording itself warrants an unconditional apology, regardless of the explanation offered afterward. Rathore, meanwhile, has said the remarks were distorted and taken out of context.
The dispute has therefore developed around both the original statement and the credibility of the subsequent clarification. Congress has used the episode to question Rathore’s remarks publicly, while the BJP leader’s explanation maintains that the intended reference was sporting rather than military.
What Happens Next?
Gehlot has reiterated that Rathore should apologise unconditionally and explain his remarks to the public. The former chief minister has also maintained that the BJP will not be able to contain the criticism as long as the controversy remains unresolved.
The dispute has already led to Congress demonstrations across Rajasthan and drawn attention to the BJP state president’s comments. Whether the controversy subsides will depend in part on Rathore’s response to the demand for an apology and whether his explanation addresses the concerns raised by political opponents.
For now, the disagreement remains centred on Rathore’s original statement, his subsequent claim that he was referring to cricket, and Gehlot’s insistence that the BJP leader must express regret without conditions.
