New Zealand opener Devon Conway produced a batting masterclass on Day 1 of the third Test against England at Trent Bridge, scoring a brilliant 157 off 224 deliveries. His innings, which included 22 fours and three sixes, laid the foundation for New Zealand’s dominance as the visitors piled on the runs after being asked to bat.
Conway shared a monumental 317-run opening partnership with captain Tom Latham, who also starred with a superb 151 off 214 balls. The pair completely outclassed England’s bowling attack to put the Black Caps in a commanding position.
Conway joins exclusive New Zealand list
With his latest century, Conway etched his name into New Zealand Cricket history by becoming just the second Kiwi batter in 95 years to score multiple 150-plus Test innings in England. He is also the first New Zealand batter to achieve the feat since 1973.
The left-hander had earlier announced himself on the international stage with a memorable double century on his Test debut, scoring 200 against England at Lord’s in June 2021.
Before Conway, former New Zealand captain Bevan Congdon was the only batter from his country to record multiple 150-plus Test scores in England. Congdon scored 176 at Nottingham before following it up with 175 at Lord’s during New Zealand’s 1973 tour.
Latham-Conway rewrite partnership record
The 317-run opening stand between Conway and Latham is now New Zealand’s highest partnership for any wicket against England in Test cricket.
The duo surpassed the previous record of 276 runs set by Stewie Dempster and Jackie Mills during the Wellington Test in 1930, ending a record that had stood for 96 years.
New Zealand’s highest Test partnerships
- 467 runs – Andrew Jones & Martin Crowe vs Sri Lanka, Wellington (1991)
- 317 runs – Tom Latham & Devon Conway vs England, Trent Bridge (2026)
- 276 runs – Stewie Dempster & Jackie Mills vs England, Wellington (1930)
Conway’s magnificent innings and the record-breaking partnership with Latham have placed New Zealand firmly in control of the third Test, giving the visitors an excellent platform to post a massive first-innings total.
