The netherlands have quietly emerged as one of the most impressive teams at the FIFA World Cup 2026, finishing top of Group F after a convincing 3-1 victory over Tunisia. While much of the spotlight has remained on global stars like Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland, and Cristiano Ronaldo, Ronald Koeman’s side have built momentum through teamwork, discipline, and attacking football.
The Dutch began their campaign with a 2-2 draw against Japan before thrashing Sweden 5-1 and defeating Tunisia 3-1 to seal first place in the group. The result also extended the Netherlands’ remarkable unbeaten World Cup group-stage run to 19 matches, with their last defeat at this stage coming against Belgium in 1994.
Strong defence, clinical attack
Although the Netherlands have conceded in each of their three group matches, their attacking unit has consistently delivered. Brian Brobbey has scored three goals so far, while Cody Gakpo has continued his impressive World Cup form. Winger Crysencio Summerville has also added pace and creativity in the final third.
Defensively, captain Virgil van Dijk has marshalled a solid backline alongside Nathan Aké, Denzel Dumfries, and Jan Paul van Hecke. Against Tunisia, Van Hecke produced one of the standout individual performances of the tournament, recording 145 touches, completing 130 of 134 passes, making 39 passes into the final third, and scoring his first international goal.
Koeman remains cautious
Despite topping the group, head coach Ronald Koeman admitted his team relaxed after taking an early 2-0 lead against Tunisia.
“I’m happy. I wanted first place in the group, and we achieved that. But I’m surprised by how easily we relaxed after going 2-0 up. That can become a problem against stronger opponents, and Morocco are an attacking team,” Koeman said.
Morocco next in the Round of 32
The Netherlands will now face Morocco in the Round of 32, a fixture expected to be one of the most competitive knockout matches. Morocco have shown they can challenge elite teams, but the Dutch have demonstrated balance, resilience, and attacking quality throughout the tournament.
Statistical models have even identified the Netherlands as a potential surprise champion. However, the knockout rounds leave no room for error, and Koeman’s men will need to maintain their attacking identity while avoiding costly lapses in concentration.
