Martina Navratilova has once again spoken out in support of WNBA star Sophie Cunningham after the Indiana Fever guard was criticized for her views on transgender athletes competing in women’s sports.
The former World No. 1 tennis player reacted after an ABC opinion piece described Cunningham’s stance as “problematic” because of its implications for diversity and the transgender community.
Navratilova Rejects Criticism of Sophie Cunningham
The controversy began after sports reporter Chris De Silva wrote in an ABC editorial that Cunningham’s views were problematic for a league that emphasizes diversity and aims to provide a safe environment for the transgender community and other minorities.
Women’s rights activist Sall Grover subsequently criticized ABC’s editorial position while discussing the way Cunningham had been characterized.
Navratilova noticed Grover’s comments and directly defended Cunningham on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“Sophie is not the PROBLEM!!! Nor is she problematic…😳,” Navratilova wrote.
The response continued Navratilova’s public support for Cunningham, whom she has defended on several occasions since the WNBA player expressed her position on transgender participation in women’s sports.
Navratilova Previously Rejected ‘White Privilege’ Claims
Navratilova had also defended Cunningham earlier in August after critics accused the Indiana Fever guard of benefiting from “white privilege” and suggested that her controversial views had contributed to her popularity among certain supporters.
A Cunningham supporter argued that the WNBA player had already been popular in women’s basketball before the recent controversy surrounding her comments.
Navratilova agreed with that assessment and responded on X:
“Yup. As usual, MJ nails it,” she wrote.
Sophie Cunningham’s Comments Sparked Debate
Cunningham became a prominent figure in the ongoing debate over transgender participation in women’s sports after expressing her opposition to transgender women competing in women’s sports and spaces.
Her comments generated significant discussion among fans and players, with supporters defending her position and critics questioning its compatibility with the WNBA’s broader emphasis on inclusion and diversity.
The controversy has also placed Cunningham under increased attention away from her performances on the basketball court.
Navratilova Also Addressed Cunningham’s WNBA Incident
Navratilova’s support for Cunningham extended beyond the debate over transgender athletes.
Earlier in August, Cunningham was involved in a controversial incident during a WNBA game against the Chicago Sky. A hard foul by Chicago Sky star DiJonai Carrington drew significant attention, with some observers suggesting Cunningham could have been targeted because of her outspoken views.
Navratilova subsequently criticized Carrington over the incident and defended Cunningham.
Navratilova Remains Outspoken on Women’s Sports
Navratilova, an 18-time Grand Slam singles champion and former World No. 1 in both singles and doubles, has remained one of the most outspoken former athletes in debates surrounding women’s sports and transgender participation.
Her latest comments demonstrate that she continues to support Cunningham despite the criticism surrounding the WNBA player’s position.
The broader debate over eligibility rules and transgender participation in women’s sport remains highly contentious, involving questions about competitive fairness, inclusion, athlete rights and sporting regulations.
