Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Breaks Duleep Trophy Record With Historic Fifty

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi created history on Monday by becoming the youngest player to score a half-century in Duleep Trophy history. The 15-year-old achieved the landmark during East Zone’s semi-final against Central Zone at the BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground 1 in Bengaluru.

Sooryavanshi reached the milestone at the age of 15 years and 157 days, breaking a record that had stood for 57 years. The young left-handed batter completed his fifty from 42 balls after smashing a six off off-spinner Saransh Jain.

Sooryavanshi Breaks 57-Year-Old Duleep Trophy Record

The previous record belonged to Laxman Singh, who scored a Duleep Trophy half-century at the age of 16 years and 23 days during the 1969 edition.

Sooryavanshi’s achievement is particularly significant because of the age at which he has made his mark in first-class cricket. His aggressive approach and ability to handle the demands of red-ball cricket have further highlighted his potential.

Laxman Singh Boheda, who passed away at the age of 35 in 1988, was a former Rajasthan opening batter. He played 53 first-class matches between the 1966-67 and 1977-78 seasons, scoring 2,423 runs at an average of 29.54, including four centuries. His highest score was 231 not out.

Yajurvindra Singh Remembers Laxman Singh

Former India Test cricketer Yajurvindra Singh, who was a contemporary of Laxman Singh, remembered him as an artistic and free-spirited stroke-maker.

Laxman’s cricketing background included representing the Indian Schools team that toured England in 1967. He played against MCC Schools at Lord’s and opened the innings alongside future India Test batter Mohinder Amarnath.

Yajurvindra recalled Laxman as a stylish and aggressive batter who possessed considerable talent and natural flair. He also highlighted the former Rajasthan player’s wristwork and carefree approach to the game.

Speaking about Sooryavanshi, Yajurvindra described the youngster as a phenomenal talent with natural ability.

Sooryavanshi Produces an Attacking 92

Sooryavanshi did not stop after reaching his record-breaking fifty. He went on to score an impressive 92 runs from 81 balls, playing a major role in helping East Zone match Central Zone’s first-innings total.

The teenager struck seven fours and seven sixes during his entertaining innings. His aggressive batting provided East Zone with momentum during a crucial stage of the semi-final.

His innings began with some uncertain moments as he played and missed several deliveries, but he quickly settled into an attacking rhythm. His first major assault came against pacer Yash Thakur, whom he hit for a huge six over mid-wicket.

Sooryavanshi later attacked the spin bowlers as well. A six against Saransh Jain took him to his second first-class fifty, while he also cleared the boundary against Harsh Dubey and Aryan Pandey.

161-Run Opening Partnership With Abhimanyu Easwaran

Sooryavanshi’s innings became even more valuable because of his partnership with experienced opener Abhimanyu Easwaran.

The pair added 161 runs for the opening wicket, giving East Zone an excellent platform against Central Zone. Easwaran played a more measured innings, scoring 69 runs from 106 deliveries.

The partnership allowed Sooryavanshi to play his natural attacking game while Easwaran provided stability at the other end.

Dropped Catch Gives Sooryavanshi a Lifeline

Sooryavanshi received an important reprieve when he was on 40. Yash Rathod dropped a relatively straightforward chance at backward point off Saransh Jain.

Central Zone were unable to capitalise on the opportunity, and Sooryavanshi continued his attacking innings. He eventually moved into the 90s after hitting a six and a four, raising hopes that he could register his maiden first-class century.

Sooryavanshi Falls Short of Maiden First-Class Century

The teenager, however, could not complete the century. Attempting a slog sweep against Harsh Dubey, Sooryavanshi hit the ball towards deep mid-wicket, where Arshad Khan completed the catch.

His dismissal ended an innings that had already become historic. Despite falling eight runs short of a century, Sooryavanshi’s 92 proved crucial in East Zone’s effort to stay level with Central Zone.

East Zone Bowled Out for 266

After the opening partnership was broken, East Zone struggled to maintain the same momentum. Their middle and lower order could not sustain the pressure, and the team was eventually bowled out for 266 runs.

Central Zone had also scored 266 in their first innings, meaning the two sides were level after the opening innings.

Central Zone then found themselves in trouble in their second innings, finishing the day at 45 for three. The match therefore remained finely balanced heading into the next stage of the semi-final.

Tilak Varma Shines in Other Duleep Trophy Semi-Final

The other Duleep Trophy semi-final also produced a major batting performance. Tilak Varma scored an unbeaten 106 to help South Zone establish a first-innings lead of 90 runs against North Zone.

Shreyas Gopal also contributed strongly with 87, while South Zone finished the day at 285 for nine after North Zone had been dismissed for 195.

Why Sooryavanshi’s Record Matters

Sooryavanshi’s record-breaking fifty represents another important milestone in his developing first-class career. At just 15 years old, he has already demonstrated the ability to compete against experienced domestic cricketers.

His 92-run innings also showed that his impact was not limited to a statistical record. He combined aggressive strokeplay with enough temperament to build a substantial partnership and take East Zone to parity with Central Zone.

While the young batter will be disappointed at missing out on his first-class century, his performance has nevertheless become one of the standout moments of the Duleep Trophy semi-finals.

Sooryavanshi’s record-breaking innings has added another chapter to the Duleep Trophy’s long history, while his attacking 92 has further underlined why he is regarded as one of India’s exciting young batting talents.
