Vaibhav Sooryavanshi once again showed his all-round ability during the Duleep Trophy, this time making an impact with the ball for East Zone. The 15-year-old spinner claimed two wickets in just three overs against North East Zone, helping his team strengthen its control over the contest.

Sooryavanshi finished with impressive figures of 2/11 from three overs. His spell became particularly important when East Zone were struggling to make further breakthroughs after reducing North East Zone to 75/5.

Ishan Kishan Took a Risk by Giving Sooryavanshi the Ball

East Zone captain and wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan turned to Sooryavanshi when the opposition was not losing wickets regularly. According to the young cricketer, Kishan believed giving him the ball was something of a gamble.

However, Sooryavanshi had confidence in his bowling ability. He revealed that Kishan did not know he considered himself a wicket-taking option when he was handed the ball.

“Ishan bhaiya thought that he was taking a risk in giving me the ball. But he didn’t know that I’m a wicket taker,” Sooryavanshi said in a video shared by BCCI Domestic.

Sooryavanshi Makes Immediate Impact

The teenager did not need many deliveries to justify the decision. His first breakthrough came when Kishan Lyngdoh attempted to attack him but failed to control the shot, sending a miscued effort towards mid-wicket.

Sooryavanshi then struck again a few deliveries later. Imliwati Lemtur edged the ball behind, giving the young spinner his second wicket of the innings.

The double strike changed the situation considerably, reducing North East Zone from 75/5 to 79/7. Sooryavanshi’s short spell therefore played an important role in East Zone’s push for a comprehensive victory.

‘I’m a Wicket Taker’ — Sooryavanshi’s Confident Mindset

Sooryavanshi explained that he understood he would probably receive only a few overs, regardless of how well he bowled. Instead of worrying about the limited opportunity, he focused on maintaining his accuracy.

“I always knew that even if I take five wickets, I will only get three overs to bowl. So I tried to bowl as well as I could. I was just trying to repeatedly land the ball in one area,” he explained.

His comments highlight the confidence and clarity of thought he displayed despite being given only a brief bowling spell. The young cricketer also admitted that contributing with the ball was particularly satisfying after he had struggled with the bat.

Sooryavanshi Disappoints With the Bat

While his bowling performance was impressive, Sooryavanshi had a quiet outing with the bat. The East Zone vice-captain scored only eight runs from six deliveries in the match.

He did not receive another opportunity to bat because East Zone completed the match by an innings and 210 runs. His bowling contribution, however, ensured that his overall performance remained significant.

East Zone Dominate North East Zone

East Zone established a commanding position after scoring 467 runs in their first innings. North East Zone were subsequently dismissed for just 111, allowing East Zone to enforce the follow-on.

Sooryavanshi’s two wickets in the second innings further accelerated the collapse. His spell helped East Zone maintain pressure and move closer to a convincing victory.

Next Challenge in Duleep Trophy Semi-Final

Sooryavanshi’s next assignment will come in the Duleep Trophy semi-final, where East Zone are scheduled to face Centre Zone at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru on Sunday.

With his ability to contribute in both departments, the teenager remains an intriguing player to watch. His latest performance also demonstrated that his value to the team extends beyond his batting, with his left-arm spin providing another option when captains need a breakthrough.
