The first phase of the agreement might be finished this week, according to US President Donald Trump, who also stated that talks to stop the war in Gaza and liberate hostages held by Hamas were proceeding quickly.
Trump’s statements follow his threat of “complete obliteration” if Hamas does not give up control of Gaza in accordance with his peace plan. Hamas’s deadline was set for Sunday at 6 p.m. washington time (EDT) and Monday at 3:30 a.m. IST.
Trump said in a post on Truth Social that during the weekend, “countries from all over the world — Arab, Muslim, and everyone else” had “very positive discussions” with Hamas. According to him, the negotiations are a component of a larger endeavor to put an end to the conflict and bring about “long sought peace in the Middle East.”
“I am told that the first phase should be completed this week, and I am asking everyone to MOVE FAST.” Additionally, he cautioned that more postponements might result in “massive bloodshed.”
For discussions, the Hamas delegation travels to Egypt.
As a team from Hamas, led by the group’s exiled Gaza chief Khalil Al-Hayya, arrived in Egypt late Sunday to participate in talks in Sharm el-Sheikh, the restarted negotiations gained impetus. Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer and other Israeli officials were scheduled to visit Monday to discuss a US-backed plan to stop the conflict and free the prisoners.
On Monday, an Israeli team headed by Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer is scheduled to travel to Egypt to participate in discussions over Donald Trump’s proposal for Gaza.
According to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the coming days will be “critical” in assessing Hamas’ commitment to carrying out the plan’s initial phase. “We will know very quickly whether Hamas is serious or not by how these technical talks go,” Rubio stated to NBC News.
According to officials briefed on the talks, the first phase of Trump’s proposed 20-point plan focuses on the release of 48 remaining hostages in Gaza, including 20 believed to be alive, in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners.
Rubio said on ABC’s This Week that the timeline for finalising the deal could not extend for long. He emphasized, “We want to see this happen very fast,” adding that “it cannot take weeks or even multiple days.”
Hamas had praised Trump’s initiative to end the war in Gaza, claiming to have agreed to some of his 20-point peace plan, including the cessation of hostilities, Israel‘s exit, and the release of Palestinian and Israeli hostages.
Israel is still being offensive. OVER THE GAZA STRIP
Negotiations have advanced, while Israeli air and ground assaults on Gaza persisted on Sunday. At least 19 individuals were murdered throughout the territory, according to local health authorities, including five slain in an airstrike in Gaza City and four civilians who were seeking aid in the south.
