Rishabh Pant once again found himself under scrutiny after throwing away a promising start during India’s first innings in the Galle Test against Sri Lanka. The wicketkeeper-batter scored 39 runs before attempting an aggressive shot against debutant spinner Keshara Nuwantha.
Pant had appeared capable of contributing a substantial score after settling at the crease, but his dismissal came at a crucial stage of the innings. Former India batter Mohammed Kaif questioned the decision-making behind the shot and urged Pant to show greater awareness of the match situation.
Rishabh Pant Falls to Another Aggressive Shot
Pant’s dismissal came only four deliveries after the second new ball became available following the completion of 80 overs.
Debutant off-spinner Keshara Nuwantha immediately put Pant under pressure. Instead of taking time to assess the conditions, Pant charged down the wicket and attempted a big slog.
He failed to control the shot, with the ball travelling towards the fielder at wide long-off. Pant’s innings ended at 39, leaving India without one of their key middle-order contributors at an important stage of the innings.
The dismissal was particularly notable because Pant had already been involved in a similar situation during India’s warm-up match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI. On that occasion too, he gifted his wicket to a spinner while attempting an aggressive slog.
Mohammed Kaif Questions Pant’s Cricketing Sense
Former India batter Mohammed Kaif did not criticize Pant for playing an aggressive brand of cricket itself. Instead, he focused on the timing of the shot and argued that Test batters need to calculate the risks according to the situation.
Speaking on Sony Sports, Kaif said Pant’s style of play was not the main issue but questioned his lack of caution immediately after the new ball was taken.
“I have no complaints about the way Rishabh Pant got out. He plays only like that, but the complaint is about common sense,” Kaif said.
Kaif pointed out that Pant repeatedly attempted aggressive movements during the over and suggested that he should have allowed himself time to understand how the new ball was behaving.
He added that even an established batter with a score of 150 would generally look to see off a few deliveries after the second new ball is introduced.
Why Pant’s Dismissal Was So Costly
The timing of Pant’s dismissal made the mistake more significant. India had already built a strong position after winning the toss and choosing to bat first in Galle.
Devdutt padikkal played a major role in India’s huge first-innings total, registering his maiden Test century. KL Rahul also contributed with an important 82-run knock.
However, India suffered a mini-collapse during the second day. Pant’s departure added to the pressure, particularly because he had the opportunity to stay at the crease and help India push towards an even bigger total.
Dhruv Jurel eventually provided stability with a valuable half-century, helping India cross the 450-run mark.
India Post 462 in Galle
India eventually reached 462 before being bowled out. Jurel’s contribution was particularly important after the visitors lost several wickets in a short period.
India captain Shubman Gill had won the toss and elected to bat first, with the visitors looking to put Sri Lanka under significant pressure with a huge first-innings score.
Despite the middle-order collapse, India’s total of 462 left them in a strong position and gave their bowlers an opportunity to put pressure on Sri Lanka.
Pant’s Shot Selection Remains a Talking Point
Pant’s ability to play unconventional and aggressive cricket has been one of his biggest strengths throughout his career. His attacking approach has produced several match-winning performances, particularly in Test cricket.
However, the same approach can also expose him to criticism when he attempts high-risk shots despite the match situation favouring a more cautious approach.
His dismissal in Galle has therefore renewed the debate over whether Pant needs to balance his natural attacking instincts with greater situational awareness, particularly when India are already in a commanding position.
For Pant, the challenge will be to retain the aggressive style that makes him such a dangerous batter while making better calculations about when to attack and when to absorb pressure.
