India vs Ireland T20I series defeat has raised questions ahead of the upcoming England tour after the world champions suffered a shocking 2-0 whitewash against Ireland. Captain Shreyas Iyer admitted that India failed to adapt to the conditions and fell short with the bat in the second T20I in Belfast.
Ireland produced a memorable performance to beat India by just one run, defending 154/8 after the visitors were restricted to 153/9 in a thrilling finish. The result marked India’s first T20I series defeat since August 2023 and ended their long unbeaten run in bilateral T20I series.
Shreyas Iyer admits batting was India’s biggest weakness
Speaking after the match, Shreyas Iyer praised Ireland’s effort and admitted that the Indian batting unit could not analyse the pitch properly.
“We fell a bit short with the bat. We fell a bit short in terms of analysing how the wicket was going to play,” Shreyas Iyer said.
The Indian captain also highlighted that Ireland showed better awareness of the conditions and executed their plans effectively throughout the match.
Prince Yadav shines on debut despite India’s defeat
Earlier, India’s bowling attack gave the team a strong chance after restricting Ireland to 154 runs. Debutant Prince Yadav impressed with a brilliant three-wicket haul, while Arshdeep Singh and Shivam Dube also contributed with key breakthroughs.
Ireland’s innings was anchored by Harry Tector, who scored a crucial 53 off 47 balls to help the hosts post a competitive total.
India’s chase collapses despite Tilak Varma’s fight
India’s run chase suffered an early setback as the top order failed to provide stability. Despite a fighting knock of 55 runs from Tilak Varma, India kept losing wickets at crucial moments.
Late efforts from Harshit Rana and Prince Yadav brought India close, but the team eventually fell one run short, handing Ireland a historic series victory.
Focus shifts to England T20I series
India will now look to bounce back during their five-match T20I series against England, starting from July 1. The team management will be hoping to address batting concerns before the next challenge.
