India Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 exit ended in heartbreak after Australia defeated the Women in Blue by six wickets at Lord’s, ending their hopes of winning their first-ever T20 World Cup title. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur admitted that India’s biggest setback was their inability to deliver their best performances against the top teams in the tournament.
Despite posting a competitive total of 170/4, India could not stop Australia’s powerful batting lineup as experienced stars Ellyse Perry and Ashleigh Gardner guided the six-time champions to a successful chase.
Harmanpreet Kaur admits India fell short against top teams
Speaking after the defeat, Harmanpreet said India needed to rethink their approach against stronger opponents. The Indian captain highlighted that major tournament success requires the team to perform at its best when facing elite sides.
“If I have to think about the entire tournament, we didn’t do well against good teams. Against the best teams always your best comes. I think we need to rethink about that.”
Harmanpreet also praised Australia’s disciplined bowling attack but admitted India were unable to convert their opportunities despite staying competitive throughout the match.
“They’re one of the best. I think they bowled according to their plans. We didn’t lose wickets, but at the same time we didn’t get what we were expecting. It was a good game but unfortunately we didn’t get over the line.”
Harmanpreet’s explosive fifty gives India fighting total
After winning the toss, India chose to bat first and got a strong start through Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma, who added a 66-run opening partnership.
Mandhana scored 38 runs while Jemimah Rodrigues contributed 34, but the highlight of India’s innings was Harmanpreet Kaur’s attacking knock. The skipper smashed a brilliant 56 off just 27 balls to help India reach 170 runs, their highest total against Australia in Women’s T20 World Cup history.
Perry and Gardner break India’s World Cup dreams
Australia’s chase started with early pressure after Georgia Voll was dismissed, but Beth Mooney and Phoebe Litchfield steadied the innings before Perry and Gardner took complete control.
Ellyse Perry scored a match-winning 56 off 38 balls, while Ashleigh Gardner remained unbeaten on 53 off 29 deliveries. Their partnership powered Australia to 172/4 with six balls remaining.
The defeat ended India’s campaign, while Australia continued their unbeaten run and advanced to the semi-finals of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026.
India’s wait for first Women’s T20 World Cup title continues
The loss extended India’s wait for their maiden Women’s T20 World Cup trophy. Harmanpreet Kaur and her team will now look to rebuild and address their performances against top-ranked teams before the next major tournament.
