South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt remains confident that her best batting is not far away despite a relatively quiet Women’s T20 World Cup campaign. Ahead of the semi-final, the star batter admitted she has been frustrated with her performances but insists she has not lost her touch with the bat.
Wolvaardt entered the tournament in outstanding form after a dominant series against India, where she scored multiple half-centuries and a century. However, she has yet to produce a major innings in the ongoing World Cup and currently sits behind several teammates in South Africa’s run-scoring charts.
Speaking before the semi-final, Wolvaardt acknowledged that South Africa’s batting unit has not performed at its full potential.
“With the bat, we probably haven’t been at 100%. All of our batters would like to score a few more runs, but hopefully when it clicks, it will be a pretty good game,” Wolvaardt said.
Mindset, Not Technique, Behind Wolvaardt’s Struggles
The South African skipper believes the issue is more mental than technical, pointing out that her excellent form from just a few months ago proves her batting fundamentals remain intact.
“It’s so recent, it’s not like my batting has changed. It’s probably just a bit of a mindset thing. Maybe I’m trying to hit the ball a bit too hard because of the pressure of a World Cup,” she explained.
Wolvaardt emphasized that she has not forgotten how to bat and hopes a calm approach will help her regain rhythm during the knockout stages.
“It’s not like I’ve forgotten how to bat. I just need to stay calm, play a few good shots, and hopefully everything will fall into place.”
South Africa Looking for Stronger Performances
Although South Africa reached the semi-finals, their campaign has not been entirely convincing. The team recovered from an opening defeat to Australia and secured important wins over India, Pakistan, the Netherlands, and Bangladesh.
Players such as Tazmin Brits, Marizanne Kapp, and Annerie Dercksen have stepped up throughout the tournament, helping South Africa advance to the final four.
Wolvaardt admitted that the team has made life difficult for itself at times but praised the group’s resilience.
“We seem to start World Cups with a loss and then put ourselves under pressure. The positive thing is that we keep finding a way to bounce back and make the semi-finals.”
Can Wolvaardt Deliver in the Knockouts?
South Africa will be hoping their captain rediscovers the form that made her one of the world’s most consistent batters over the last few years. With a place in the final at stake, Wolvaardt has the perfect opportunity to silence any doubts and lead her side with a match-winning performance.
If she can translate her recent domestic and international form onto the World Cup stage, South Africa’s chances of reaching another major final will receive a significant boost.
