Mohammad Kaif Picks India Pace Attack for Sri Lanka Test, Backs Siraj and Prasidh Krishna

Mohammad Kaif India pace attack prediction has sparked discussion ahead of the opening Test against Sri Lanka, with the former India batter backing Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna to lead the seam department in Galle.

According to Kaif, experience becomes particularly important in Sri Lankan conditions, where pitches can be flat and the ball may lose its seam relatively quickly. He also pointed towards the use of the Kookaburra ball as another factor that could influence India’s selection.

Kaif believes experienced bowlers are better equipped to adapt when the conditions do not provide consistent assistance to the seamers.

Why Gurnoor Brar misses out in Kaif’s predicted XI

Gurnoor Brar’s omission is particularly notable because the Gujarat Titans pacer impressed during India’s recent three-day warm-up match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI.

Brar claimed three wickets across the two innings, while Siraj and Krishna picked up one wicket each. Despite Brar’s stronger numbers in the practice game, Kaif believes the Test match environment could favour the more experienced duo.

The former India cricketer suggested that Brar could become a stronger selection option in conditions such as England or South Africa, where pace and seam movement can play a greater role.

However, for a Test in the subcontinent, Kaif feels that reverse swing and experience could prove more valuable.

Experience could be crucial with the Kookaburra ball

Kaif’s selection argument is largely based on the nature of the conditions India could encounter in Sri Lanka. He pointed out that hot weather and flatter surfaces can make life difficult for fast bowlers.

The Kookaburra ball can also lose its pronounced seam relatively quickly, reducing the assistance available through conventional movement. In such circumstances, bowlers need to rely on changes in pace, accuracy, reverse swing and tactical variations.

That is where Kaif believes Siraj’s international experience could give India an advantage.

Mohammed Siraj brings significant Test experience

Siraj is comfortably the more experienced option among India’s current seamers. He has played 46 Tests and taken 140 wickets, including five five-wicket hauls.

His ability to bowl long spells and generate movement with an older ball makes him an important part of India’s Test bowling attack. Kaif believes those qualities could become particularly useful during the first Test in Galle.

Prasidh Krishna, meanwhile, has featured in seven Tests and taken 25 wickets. His best Test figures are 4/62, and his height allows him to generate bounce that can add another dimension to India’s pace attack.

Kaif believes Brar could be an option overseas

Kaif’s comments do not necessarily suggest that Brar is far from India’s Test plans. Instead, his argument is that the young pacer may be better suited to conditions offering more assistance to fast bowlers.

He specifically mentioned South Africa and England as environments where Brar could potentially be considered higher in the pecking order.

That distinction is important because team selection in Test cricket often depends heavily on conditions. A bowler who offers significant value on a seaming surface may not necessarily be the best option on a slower subcontinental pitch.
