The political controversy over an alleged ‘shuddhikaran’ ritual at a Haldwani ground has taken another turn after the BJP’s Scheduled Caste Morcha performed a ‘buddhi shuddhi yagna’ in Dehradun targeting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

The latest BJP action came as the dispute over an alleged purification ceremony following Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s rally in Haldwani continued to intensify. Congress has alleged that the episode reflects caste discrimination and has sought police action under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The BJP, however, has rejected the caste-based interpretation. Its leaders have maintained that the ground was cleaned because the Congress event had left the venue littered and that a havan was conducted as part of the cleaning programme. The party has also denied that its officials organised the ritual.

Police registered the case under Sections 196 and 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Section 3(1) of the SC/ST Act, according to the supplied account of the case.

Kumar also claimed that people from different sections of society, including members of the Scheduled Caste community, participated in the cleanliness drive and ritual.

Congress launches protests across Uttarakhand

Congress workers submitted complaints at police stations across Uttarakhand, seeking FIRs under the SC/ST Act against those allegedly involved in the ‘shuddhikaran’ programme.

Party workers also protested outside the Uttarakhand Secretariat and demanded the withdrawal of the FIR registered against Gandhi.

Congress spokesperson Pratima Singh said party workers had been demanding action since August 9 and alleged that their complaints had not resulted in an FIR. She said complaints had now been submitted in all districts.

Singh also warned that Congress would organise a larger protest if its demands were not addressed, saying leaders from Delhi could participate.

The escalation gives the issue a statewide political dimension rather than leaving it confined to Haldwani.

BJP announces counter-protests

The BJP has also taken the controversy to the streets.

BJP’s SC Morcha state president Balbir Ghuniyal accused Rahul Gandhi and Congress of attempting to disturb social harmony by linking the ritual to caste.

Ghuniyal said people in Uttarakhand were not even aware of Kharge’s caste and maintained that no BJP worker was present at the event in question.

Uttarakhand Minister Bhagwat Makwana also entered the dispute, responding to the controversy surrounding Gandhi and the legal action against him.
