Kerala BJP vice-president Shone George has demanded the resignation of Chief Minister VD Satheesan, alleging that the Congress leader’s recent criticism of the electoral process amounted to an admission that the state’s Assembly election was “illegal”.
George’s remarks came after Satheesan publicly backed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi‘s protest over alleged irregularities in India‘s electoral process and called for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign.
The BJP leader has now sought to turn Satheesan’s criticism of the Election Commission into a political challenge, arguing that a chief minister WHO questions the legitimacy of an election should not continue in office.
Shone George Demands Satheesan’s Resignation
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Shone George said Satheesan and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge had described the election as illegal and argued that Satheesan should therefore step down.
George said that if the chief minister himself believed the election held in Kerala four months earlier was illegal, he had no right to continue occupying the chief minister’s post.
He also called for the dissolution of the state Assembly, making the demand part of a wider BJP attack on the Congress leadership’s allegations concerning the electoral process.
The BJP’s position is based on its interpretation of Satheesan’s public statements. Satheesan, however, has not simply declared the Kerala Assembly election invalid; his comments have focused on what he alleges are wider irregularities and problems affecting India’s electoral system.
What Did VD Satheesan Say About the Election Process?
Satheesan had backed Rahul Gandhi’s protest against alleged irregularities in the electoral process in a post on X on Tuesday.
He argued that free and fair elections are fundamental to democracy and alleged that India’s electoral process was being “sabotaged”.
Satheesan also described the street protest led by Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in Delhi as a democratic struggle and expressed support for their campaign against the Election Commission.
His comments were directed at the broader electoral process and the allegations being raised by the Congress leadership rather than a formal announcement declaring Kerala’s Assembly election legally void.
Satheesan Calls for Gyanesh Kumar’s Resignation
A central part of Satheesan’s criticism was his demand for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Satheesan said there was no solution other than Kumar stepping down and said Kerala would extend its full support to the democratic protest against the Election Commission.
He also referred to an observation attributed to Chief Justice of India Surya Kant concerning Form 6. Satheesan argued that the observation supported Rahul Gandhi’s position regarding alleged manipulation of India’s electoral process.
Form 6 is used in the electoral registration process, making the issue particularly relevant to the wider political dispute over voter lists and the Election Commission’s procedures.
Satheesan Joined INDIA Bloc Protest in Delhi
Satheesan was among opposition leaders who participated in the INDIA bloc protest against Gyanesh Kumar in Delhi on Tuesday.
Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also took part in the protest. Satheesan, along with the two Congress leaders, was detained for around two hours before being released.
The protest formed part of the opposition’s broader campaign over alleged irregularities in the electoral process and its criticism of the Election Commission.
The BJP has rejected the opposition’s allegations and defended the Election Commission, turning the issue into another point of confrontation between the two political camps.
BJP Uses Satheesan’s Comments to Step Up Attack
George’s demand for Satheesan’s resignation represents a political challenge built around the chief minister’s own criticism of the electoral system.
The BJP leader argues that questioning the legitimacy of the election while continuing to hold office creates a contradiction that requires Satheesan to step down.
The Congress position is different. Satheesan has criticised the electoral process and demanded accountability from the Election Commission, but his statements cited in the dispute do not amount to a formal declaration that Kerala’s Assembly election has been legally annulled.
That distinction is at the heart of the latest exchange between the BJP and Congress in Kerala.
Satheesan and Rajeev Chandrasekhar Have Clashed Over SIR
The latest confrontation follows an earlier war of words between Satheesan and Kerala BJP chief Rajeev Chandrasekhar over the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision, or SIR, exercise.
The dispute intensified after a report in The Indian Express claimed there was dissent within the Election Commission over the SIR exercise.
As Rahul Gandhi continued his criticism of the poll panel, Chandrasekhar defended the Election Commission and argued that differences of opinion among its members were normal.
Chandrasekhar also launched a personal attack on Rahul Gandhi, initially describing him as a “creative fabricator” and later using the term “fraud”.
Satheesan Accuses BJP of Double Standards
Satheesan condemned Chandrasekhar’s remarks as personal and abusive and accused the BJP of applying double standards in its approach to the SIR controversy.
The exchange added another layer to the political dispute over electoral procedures, with the Congress questioning the Election Commission’s actions and the BJP defending the poll panel.
The disagreement has continued as opposition leaders have stepped up their demands for accountability and the BJP has challenged the basis of the allegations.
Chandrasekhar Challenges Satheesan Over Rahul Gandhi
Chandrasekhar subsequently challenged Satheesan to persuade Rahul Gandhi to apologise to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Election Commission.
He said that unless such an apology was made, he would continue to describe the Congress leader as a “fraud”.
The exchange illustrates how the debate over electoral procedures has expanded into a broader political confrontation involving senior Congress and BJP leaders.
Kerala Electoral Dispute Turns Into Political Battle
The latest demand for Satheesan’s resignation shows how allegations surrounding India’s electoral process are increasingly shaping political exchanges in Kerala.
The Congress and its allies have raised concerns about alleged irregularities and questioned the Election Commission’s handling of electoral procedures. The BJP has rejected those allegations and defended the poll panel while challenging opposition leaders over their claims.
George’s demand goes further by arguing that Satheesan’s criticism should have direct consequences for his position as chief minister.
Whether the issue develops beyond political rhetoric will depend on the actions of the parties and the institutions involved. For now, the dispute remains centred on competing claims over the credibility of the electoral process and the political responsibility of those making those claims.
