Gurnoor Brar Added to North Zone Squad for Duleep Trophy 2026 Semifinal

Gurnoor Brar Duleep Trophy 2026 inclusion has strengthened North Zone ahead of their semifinal clash against South Zone. The Punjab fast bowler has been added to the squad following India’s 1-0 Test series victory over Sri Lanka.

Brar has travelled to Bengaluru and joined his North Zone teammates at the BCCI Centre of Excellence. He is expected to be considered for the playing XI when North Zone face South Zone in the semifinal on Sunday.

The addition of Brar is expected to provide the young fast bowler with valuable match practice in the longer format. With India preparing for their upcoming two-Test series against New zealand in November, selectors are keen to give promising pace options more opportunities in first-class cricket.

Although Brar is yet to make his Test debut, he has already become part of India’s wider national setup. He was included in the squads for India’s previous two Test series and has also been involved in the BCCI’s targeted player development programme for more than a year.

His inclusion in the Duleep Trophy semifinal could therefore be an important step in his development as India continue to build depth in their fast-bowling department.

Brar’s impressive first-class record

Brar’s recent performances explain why the selectors continue to monitor his progress closely. During India A’s shadow tour of Sri Lanka in July, the Punjab pacer produced an outstanding performance in the second unofficial Test.

He finished that match with figures of 10 wickets for 145 runs, demonstrating his ability to make an impact across two innings and operate effectively in red-ball cricket.

Across 19 first-class appearances, Brar has taken 62 wickets at an average of 25.24. His record suggests that he has already developed considerable experience despite being relatively new to the international setup.

Gurnoor Brar has also made his ODI debut

Brar’s development has not been limited to first-class cricket. The right-arm fast bowler made his One Day International debut against Afghanistan in June before featuring in all three ODIs during India’s tour of England.

After six ODI appearances, Brar has 11 wickets at an average of 32.81. His international exposure has given him experience across different conditions and increased his chances of remaining in contention for future India squads.

North Zone face South Zone in Duleep Trophy semifinal

North Zone will meet South Zone in the second Duleep Trophy semifinal. The addition of Brar gives North Zone another established pace option as they look to secure a place in the tournament final.

The other semifinal will feature Central Zone against East Zone. The winners of both semifinal matches will meet in Chennai for the Duleep Trophy final, scheduled to begin at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on September 6.

For Brar, the semifinal represents more than just another domestic fixture. A strong performance could strengthen his case for future India Test selection, particularly with the New Zealand series on the horizon.

Auqib Nabi set for possible County Cricket stint

Meanwhile, another fast-bowling prospect, Jammu and Kashmir’s Auqib Nabi, is reportedly preparing for a short stint in English county cricket. National selectors are looking to expose the swing bowler to seam-friendly English conditions rather than retaining him in the current Duleep Trophy setup.

Nabi enjoyed an exceptional 2025-26 Ranji Trophy campaign, claiming 60 wickets at an average of 12.56. His ability to extract movement with the new ball has kept him firmly in contention for India’s upcoming assignments.

If his county plans do not materialize, Nabi could return to India’s domestic schedule for the India A series against Australia in September before potentially joining Jammu and Kashmir for the Irani Cup.

India continue to build fast-bowling depth

The decisions involving Brar and Nabi highlight India’s efforts to develop a strong pool of fast bowlers beyond the established international names. Regular first-class cricket and exposure to different conditions can help the selectors assess which players are ready for the Test level.

For Brar, the Duleep Trophy semifinal provides an immediate opportunity to demonstrate his red-ball credentials. A productive spell against South Zone could further enhance his reputation and put him closer to earning a maiden Test cap.
