Kanpur Murder Case: Son Cites Father’s Relationships as Motive

The Murder Investigation into Kanpur businessman Vineet Minocha has taken a complex turn after his son, Subrat Minocha, allegedly told police that he wanted his father to die because of his Relationships with several women.

According to police officials, Subrat described his father as a man of “loose character” and said he wanted him dead, although he allegedly claimed that he did not want Vineet to be killed by stabbing. Subrat was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the murder.

Police are now examining his account against the statement of former employee Vishal Gautam, telephone records, CCTV footage and the timeline of events surrounding September 5. Investigators are also looking at Subrat’s reported financial difficulties and a possible property-related motive.

The case has become more complicated because the accounts given by the people being questioned do not completely match. Police said Subrat initially blamed his wife, Shalu, before later taking responsibility for arranging the alleged murder. Shalu has denied any involvement, while investigators have continued to examine her possible role.

Subrat Says He Wanted His Father to Die

Subrat’s reported explanation for the murder focuses heavily on his father’s relationships with several women.

When asked whether he still believed his father should have died, Subrat reportedly referred to Vineet’s relationships and said his father was open about them. According to the account attributed to Subrat, Vineet would tell family members that his personal affairs were his own Business and that they should not interfere.

Subrat allegedly said that while he wanted Vineet to die, he regretted the manner in which the murder was carried out. Police are examining whether the personal conflict described by Subrat was the principal motive or whether it overlapped with other disputes involving money and property.

The allegation about Vineet’s relationships is part of the account given during the investigation and has not independently established the motive for the killing. Police are attempting to determine which parts of the competing statements can be supported by evidence.

Financial Pressure Adds Another Layer to the Case

Subrat’s financial situation has emerged as another significant part of the investigation.

He reportedly told reporters that Vineet gave him Rs 40,000 every month for his expenses, while his monthly spending was around Rs 55,000. Subrat said he managed the difference by taking loans and using credit cards, which increased his liabilities.

Police have separately found that Subrat had debts of more than Rs 20 lakh. Investigators are examining loans associated with Money View, ICICI and Navi, as well as money reportedly borrowed from a friend.

The financial investigation also includes an earlier dispute between Vineet and Subrat concerning money from the sale of office items. Police are examining whether that disagreement contributed to tensions between father and son.

However, financial difficulty alone does not establish a criminal motive. Investigators are looking at the debts alongside the other evidence to determine whether money played a direct role in the alleged planning of the murder.

Police Say the Murder Plan Was Discussed Months Earlier

Subrat allegedly told police that the plan to kill Vineet had been made three to four months before the murder. He said he had discussed it with Vishal Gautam, a former employee.

According to the account attributed to Subrat, money was offered to Vishal to carry out the plan. Subrat also indicated that the original intention was to make Vineet’s death appear natural rather than immediately look like a homicide.

Subrat reportedly told investigators that he had the original key to the premises and arranged for a duplicate to be made in case the original key did not work. Police are examining this claim as part of their reconstruction of how access to the premises may have been obtained.

He also said he and Vishal met on the evening of September 5 on Virala Road and spoke over the phone. According to Subrat’s version, Vishal told him that he could not carry out the plan alone and needed another person.

Vishal’s Account Differs From Subrat’s Version

The statement attributed to Vishal has introduced significant differences into the investigation.

According to police, Vishal told investigators that Subrat had instructed him to name Shalu if they were caught and had promised him Rs 6 lakh. Vishal allegedly also said that Subrat called him around six times on the day of the murder and wanted the killing to appear like a natural death.

Police are now comparing that account with Subrat’s statement and the available digital evidence.

The investigation reportedly involves around 258 calls between Subrat and Vishal. By comparison, police have identified around 28 calls between Vishal and Shalu.

Vishal also allegedly purchased a new SIM card on September 3. According to investigators, five calls were made from that number, all to Subrat.

The call records could help investigators establish communication patterns and the timing of contact between the accused. However, the existence of a call does not by itself establish what was discussed, which is why police are also examining CCTV footage, movements and other circumstantial evidence.

What Vishal Allegedly Told Police About the Attack

Vishal’s alleged account also provides a different description of what happened during the attack.

According to investigators, Vishal told police that Vineet saw him and another accused during the attack and raised an alarm. Vishal allegedly said that he panicked after being seen and attacked Vineet with a knife.

That account is being examined alongside Subrat’s reported claim that he wanted his father dead but did not want him to be stabbed.

The difference could become important as investigators attempt to establish the individual roles of everyone involved. Police must determine WHO allegedly planned the killing, who arranged the logistics and who physically participated in the attack.

Property Motive Also Under Investigation

Investigators are not limiting the motive inquiry to Vineet’s personal relationships and Subrat’s financial problems. A possible property angle has also emerged.

Vishal has allegedly told police that Subrat feared Vineet could transfer his property to one of the women with whom he allegedly had relationships.

Police are examining that claim alongside the financial evidence. The property question is particularly relevant because Vineet had a registered will from 2022.

According to the details being examined by investigators, the will divided his properties among his wife Punita, his son Subrat and his daughter Shubhani.

The existence of that will does not by itself establish a property motive. Investigators would still need to determine what Subrat believed about his father’s assets, whether he expected changes to the inheritance arrangements and whether those concerns were connected to the alleged murder plan.

Subrat Initially Blamed His Wife, Police Say

Another major development in the investigation concerns Subrat’s changing account of Shalu’s alleged involvement.

Police said Subrat initially blamed his wife for the murder. During sustained questioning, however, investigators said he changed his account and eventually took responsibility for arranging the killing.

According to police, Subrat later said he felt guilty that Shalu had become embroiled in the case because of him. He allegedly decided to take responsibility after initially attempting to shift the blame.

Shalu has denied having any role in the murder. Police have nevertheless continued to examine the allegations against her rather than treating either account as conclusive.

Police Questioned the Couple Face-to-Face

Investigators also questioned Subrat and Shalu together as they attempted to clarify their respective accounts.

According to police officials, Shalu broke down after seeing Subrat and cried for around 20 minutes. Subrat reportedly remained largely silent during the interaction and later turned his face away.

Police said Subrat eventually confessed at around 4 am after realising that his arrest was imminent and that he would have to go to jail.

Any statement attributed to an accused remains subject to the applicable legal process and must be considered alongside independently obtained evidence. For that reason, investigators are continuing to test Subrat’s account rather than treating his reported confession as the sole basis of the case.

The September 5 Timeline Is Central to the Investigation

Police are now reconstructing the events of September 5 in detail.

The timing of meetings, phone calls and movements could help investigators determine how the alleged plan developed and what happened before, during and after the attack.

Several categories of evidence are being examined, including:

• CCTV footage covering relevant locations.
• The original and duplicate keys reportedly connected to the premises.

For example, the reported 258 calls between Subrat and Vishal establish a substantial pattern of communication, but the records alone cannot reveal the content or purpose of every conversation. Similarly, evidence of Subrat’s debts can establish financial pressure without automatically proving that money motivated the murder.

The same principle applies to the allegations involving Shalu. Her denial, Subrat’s changing statements and Vishal’s allegations must be compared with evidence such as call records, CCTV footage and movements before her role can be established.

Investigators need to establish how the alleged plan was developed, who knew about it, whether money was offered, who had access to the premises and what happened during the attack on September 5.

They must also determine the relevance of the reported calls between Subrat and Vishal, the new SIM allegedly used by Vishal, the duplicate key and the CCTV footage. Each piece of evidence has to be assessed in the context of the others.

The financial and property investigations will likewise need to establish whether those issues were directly connected to the alleged Crime or were simply part of the broader relationship between Vineet and his son.
