Meghalaya Man Missing in Karnataka Traced, Reunited With Family

A Meghalaya man WHO went missing in Karnataka while looking for work has been traced safely and reunited with his family after coordinated efforts by the Meghalaya and Karnataka Police.

A man from Meghalaya who had travelled to Karnataka in search of employment and went missing in July has been traced and brought safely back to his family, officials said on Monday.

Kwis Sumer, a resident of Muktapur village in West Jaintia Hills district, had been missing since July 15 after travelling to Karnataka to look for work. He was eventually traced to Tiptur in Tumakuru district and later returned to Meghalaya, where he met his family and members of his clan in Shillong.

The search involved coordination between the Meghalaya and Karnataka governments and police forces after the case was brought to the attention of the Meghalaya government.

How the search for Kwis Sumer began

The matter came to the Meghalaya government’s attention through a memorandum submitted on July 27.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma subsequently took up the issue with the Karnataka government and facilitated coordination between the two states.

A Meghalaya Police team led by IPS officer Lovish Garg travelled to Bengaluru along with representatives of Sumer’s clan. The team worked with senior Karnataka Police officials to establish his whereabouts.

Investigators reconstructed Sumer’s last known movements and narrowed down his possible location using technical and other investigative inputs.

Social media contact provided the breakthrough

A major breakthrough came when Sumer attempted to contact his family through social Media.

According to officials, he was able to make contact with the help of Kavi Kumar, who had provided him with shelter and assistance while he was staying in Karnataka.

Investigators acted on the information and, through coordination between the Meghalaya Police and Karnataka Police, traced Sumer to Tiptur in Tumakuru district.

He was found safe and subsequently taken into the care of the authorities as arrangements were made for his return to Meghalaya.

Meghalaya and Karnataka police coordinate operation

The case highlighted the role of interstate coordination in tracing a Missing Person who had travelled far from his home state.

The Meghalaya Police team worked with Karnataka Police officials in Bengaluru and elsewhere to reconstruct Sumer’s movements and follow the information that ultimately led investigators to Tiptur.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma thanked both police forces and other people involved in the operation.

“With the help of the Karnataka Police, especially the Bangalore Police, and the hard work of the Meghalaya Police and other stakeholders, we were able to find him. He is back safely to our state,” Sangma said.

He also thanked the police teams and others who helped ensure Sumer was located and brought safely back to Meghalaya.

Man returns to Meghalaya after weeks of uncertainty

After being traced, Sumer was reunited with his family and clan members in Shillong.

He expressed his gratitude to the Chief Minister and everyone involved in ensuring his safe return.

Members of his clan also thanked the authorities for their efforts to locate him and bring him back home.

Officials said arrangements were being made to take Sumer to his home in Muktapur village, bringing the search to an end.

Why the case is significant

Sumer’s disappearance had prompted concern because he had travelled from Meghalaya to Karnataka while seeking employment and was subsequently out of contact with his family.

The case required police teams from two states to work together, with investigators using information about his last known movements as well as technical inputs.

The social media contact facilitated with the help of Kavi Kumar ultimately provided investigators with a crucial lead.

The successful operation demonstrates how information from family members, local contacts and social media can complement police investigation when a person goes missing outside their home state.

Search ends with safe reunion

The search for Kwis Sumer began after he went missing in Karnataka on July 15 and continued until investigators traced him to Tiptur.

Following coordination between the Meghalaya and Karnataka authorities, he was found safe and arrangements were made for his return.

He has now been reunited with his family, while officials have thanked the police personnel, clan representatives and other stakeholders who contributed to the search.

With Sumer safely back in Meghalaya and arrangements underway for his return to Muktapur village, the interstate search that began weeks earlier has come to a close.
