
US President Donald Trump used a visit to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston on Friday to highlight what he described as a new chapter in America’s space ambitions, announcing plans for a Space Academy while speaking directly with astronauts aboard the International Space Station.
The announcement came during a visit that combined several themes of the US space programme: astronaut training, military and civilian aerospace education, the continued operation of the International Space Station and plans for human missions farther beyond low-Earth orbit.

The broader space programme faces a similar challenge. Ambitions to return humans to the Moon, establish a sustained lunar presence and eventually send astronauts to Mars require long-term investment, technological development and a highly skilled workforce.

For now, the Houston announcement is best viewed as a statement of direction rather than a completed programme.
